On December 13th, internationally, Personal Records is proud to present A Dead Poem’s long-awaited debut album, Abstract Existence, in CD format. The new single “Before The Rising Sun” can now be heard and pre-ordered on Personal Records‘ official Bandcamp page.

Hailing from Brazil, A Dead Poem was formed in 2023 by Marlon Combat, with the goal of rescuing the essence and atmosphere of doom/black metal practiced by Katatonia, October Tide, Finland’s Rapture and, mainly, Paradise Lost and Rotting Christ during the early 90s. Starting the compositions for the first album, he invited the experienced multi-instrumentalist Carlos Misanthropic to take over the vocals and other instruments, thus forming a duo with the same goals and with extreme musical harmony.

With that, A Dead Poem have gathered enough material to produce the grim and macabre debut single “Until the Seventh Day,” which is featured on their debut EP Absence of Life, which will be released digitally in November 2023 and then as a limited edition CD in early 2024 via Cold Art Industry Records. The band’s music has since gained the attention of the eclectic Personal Records, who are now set to release their debut album.

Aptly titled Abstract Existence, A Dead Poem’s debut album is a tour de force of vintage vibes—the velvety, incense-choked essence of 1993, when gothic doom, black metal, and melodeath briefly intermingled and crossed paths. One could point to classics like Paradise Lost’s Gothic, Katatonia’s Dance of December Souls or even Rotting Christ’s later underdog A Dead Poem as the firm aesthetic foundation upon which the duo build their darkly emotive anthems, but A Dead Poem is a deeply understanding of subtlety and restraint, allowing each of these seven hypnotic songs to slowly work its spell and drown the listener in a sadness so profound that you can practically feel the era’s authentic black turtleneck closing in around you. Nothing more, but definitely nothing less, Abstract Existence is an exercise in purity, of paying tribute and tastefully embellishing a unique canon: a powerful time when the subgenre was experimenting with which paths to take, establishing its own pros and cons.

Sealing this authenticity is the exquisitely mossy and grimy production, wringing every last harsh note for all it’s worth.
