Ihr seid alle erfahrene Musiker und habt in anderen Bands gespielt. Wie habt ihr euch getroffen und welche Gründe haben euch bewogen, Desperation BLVD zu gründen?
(Alex) Elvis und ich sind seit fast 20 Jahren Freunde. Er war in der Band Elvenking und ich bei den Revoltons, zwei Metal Bands aus der gleichen Ära der späten 90er! Wir haben bereits 2010 beschlossen, ein Rock’n Roll Projekt zu starten und nahmen ein paar Alben auf. Obwohl das Projekt endete, wollten wir weiterhin rocken. Rock’n Roll liegt uns im Blut und so beschlossen wir Desperation BLVD zu gründen!
War dieser Bandname eine spontane Idee oder was hat euch zu Desperation BLVD inspiriert?
(Elvis) Die Idee kam uns auf einer Tour, als wir gerade irgendwo unterwegs waren und über Probleme mit Musikern, das Musikgeschäft, die lokale Szene und Freunde redeten. Mit viel Humor dachten wir, es ist eine hoffnungslose „desperate“ Situation. Zur gleichen Zeit hatte ich ein Sweet Album mit dem Titel „Desolation Boulevard“, das wirklich sehr cool klingt, im Kopf. Wir brachten beides zusammen und das war es!
Welche Musiker haben euch am meisten beeinflusst und hattet ihr eventuell die Möglichkeit sie zu treffen oder auch mit ihnen zusammenzuarbeiten?
(Alex) Guns n‘ Roses, Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Hardcore Superstar und Crashdiet! Wir hatten das Glück mit dem großen Thomas Silver, dem Gründer von Hardcore Superstar für unsere neue EP zusammenzuarbeiten. Er hat ein fantastisches Gitarrensolo zu dem Song North East Boulevard beigesteuert, ebenso wie David Reese die Vocals, ein weiteres großes Vorbild! Tatsächlich mögen wir nicht nur Rock’n Roll Musik. Wir sind große Fans von Duran Duran und beschlossen, den Song Hold Back the Rain zu covern!
Wie läuft das Songwriting in eurer Band ab? Wer schreibt die Lyriks?
(Elvis) Desperation BLVD war ein Projekt von Alex und mir, so haben wir außer dem Gesang alles selbst geschrieben, arrangiert, aufgenommen und produziert. Gewöhnlich schreiben wir unsere Ideen getrennt auf und komplettieren diese dann gemeinsam zu einem Song. Mit den Songtexten ist es dasselbe. Wir haben verschiedene Arbeitsweisen, deshalb schreibt jeder gerne für sich, aber manchmal arbeiten wir auch zusammen an Ideen.
Ihr habt eure EP „Desperation BLVD“ mit 6 Songs am 6. Dezember 2020 ohne eigenen Sänger in der Band veröffentlicht. Stattdessen hattet ihr Gastmusiker für die Gesangsparts. Was war der Grund für diesen ungewöhnlichen Weg?
(Elvis) Zu dieser Zeit hatten wir gerade unser bisheriges Projekt aufgrund von Problemen mit Bandmitgliedern aufgelöst. Das Letzte was wir wollten nach 7 Jahren Achterbahnfahrt war neue Musiker zu finden im Bewusstsein der Situation um uns herum. Gleichzeitig wollten wir aber weiter Musik schreiben und spielen und so schlug ich Alex vor, zusammen weiterzumachen was dann zu Desperation BLVD führte. Wie ich bereits sagte, schrieben, arrangierten und produzierten wir eine 6 Songs EP und um sie zu vervollständigen, haben wir einige Freunde und Gäste angerufen, die uns mit dem Gesang halfen.
Ich denke ihr werdet in der Zukunft auch Konzerte spielen wollen, also braucht ihr einen festen Gesangspartner. Sucht ihr bereits danach? Gibt es vielleicht einen Wunschpartner?
(Elvis) Nicht wirklich, aufgrund der Pandemie ist das zur Zeit nicht möglich, wir konzentrieren uns auf die Promotion. Natürlich werden wir für das nächste Album einen Sänger suchen. Wir würden gerne jemanden finden, der komplett in die Band integriert ist. Das ist das Wichtigste für uns nach all den schlechten Erfahrungen.
Ihr konntet mit einigen berühmten Musikern wie David Reese (ex Accept/Bonfire), Fabio D’Amore (Serenity) und Alessia Scolletti (Temperance) zusammenarbeiten. Michele Guaitoli hat die Songs in seinem Studio aufgenommen und gemixt. Wie habt ihr die Zusammenarbeit mit ihnen empfunden?
(Elvis) Es war wirklich entspannt, weil Michele, Fabio, Alessia und auch Claudio und Mattia sehr langjährige Freunde von uns sind. Wir sind aus der gleichen Szene und mit einigen von ihnen haben wir die Bühnen mit unseren vorherigen Bands geteilt und sind mit ihnen gewachsen. David Reese und Thomas Silver haben wir kontaktiert, weil wir wussten, dass beide oft als Gastmusiker arbeiten und sie haben es freundlicherweise auch mit uns getan.
Ich konnte Michele Guaitoli ein paar Fragen zu seiner Arbeit an der Desperation BLVD EP stellen. Wie bist du mit den Jungs von Desperation BLVD in Kontakt gekommen und wie war es mit ihnen zusammenzuarbeiten? Gibt es Pläne für eine weitere Kooperation in der Zukunft?
(Michele) Alex und ich sind schon sehr lange Freunde, wir kennen uns seit 10 Jahren und er hat meine Arbeit immer verfolgt, aber wir hatten nie die Gelegenheit für eine Zusammenarbeit im Studio. Ich habe auch einige Vocals für seine andere Band Revoltons aufgenommen. Als er diese neue Band gegründet hat, haben wir uns schließlich entschlossen, in meinem The Groove Factory Studio gemeinsam daran zu arbeiten. Hier wurde die gesamte EP aufgenommen, gemixt und der Sound abgestimmt. Wie gesagt, es ist eine starke Freundschaft und viel professioneller Respekt zwischen uns beiden und die Zusammenarbeit war sehr einfach und wie selbstverständlich. Ich weiß nicht, ob es mir erlaubt ist etwas über die Zukunft von Desperation BLVD zu äußern, aber was ganz sicher gesagt werden kann ist, dass es nicht das letzte Mal gewesen ist, dass Alex und ich unsere Namen zusammen auf dem gleichen Booklet stehen haben.
Was sind eure nächsten Ziele mit Desperation BLVD? Eine neue Single oder ein Album?
(Elvis) Unsere ursprüngliche Idee war jeden Song von der EP zu promoten, um unseren Namen bekannter zu machen und das Interesse für die Band zu wecken. Gleichzeitig arbeiten wir aber schon an unserem ersten richtigen Album.

Interview with Alex (Crown) Corona and Elvis (Hell) Ortolan
from Desperation BLVD incl. guest statement by Michele Guaitoli, Vocalist for Visions of Atlantis, Temperance and ERA, Producer & Sound Engineer at The Groove Factory Studio (Udine – Italy)
You all are experienced musicians and played in other bands. How did you meet up and what made you decide to start Desperation BLVD?
(Alex). Me and Elvis have been friends for almost 20 years. He was in Elvenking and I was in Revoltons, 2 metal bands born in the same area in the late 90’s! We already decided to create a R n’ r project in 2010 and we did a couple of albums. When that was over we still wanted to rock. R n’ r is our blood so we decided to create Desperation BLVD!
Was your bandname a spontaneous idea or what inspired you to the name Desperation BLVD?
(Elvis) The idea came up on tour, we were driving in the middle of nowhere, talking about our problems with musicians, music business, local scene and people around us. With a lot of humor, we thought was a „desperate“ situation. At the time I had in my mind a Sweet album called „Desolation Boulevard“ that really sounded cool. We joined everything and that was!
Which musicians influenced you the most and did you have the opportunity to meet or perhaps already work with them?
(Alex). Guns n’ Roses, Motley crue, Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Hardcore Superstar and Crashdiet! We were lucky to work with the mighty Thomas Silver, former Hardcore Superstar for our new Ep. He did an amazing guitar solo on the song North East Boulevard where David Reece is on Vocals, another great influence! We don’t like only r n’r music indeed! We are big fans of DURAN DURAN and we decided to cover the song Hold Back the Rain!
How does the songwriting process work in your band? Who writes the lyrics?
(Elvis) Desperation BLVD was born as project of me and Alex, so, we wrote ,arranged, recorded and produced everything but the vocals. Usually we lay down the ideas separately and then we work together to build and complete the song. Same about the lyrics, we have two different styles so, we prefer write on our own, but sometimes we join ideas
You released the 6 song EP „Desperation BLVD“ last year on 6th december without having an own singer in the band. Instead you had some guest musicians for the vocal parts. What was the reason for this unusual way?
(Elvis) At the time we had just disbanded our previous project due to problems with members. After seven years of rollercoaster the last thing we wanted was to find new musicians, aware about the situation around us. But, at the same time we wanted to keep on write music and play, so, I suggest to Alex to do what became DB. As I told you before, we wrote, arranged, recorded and produced a six tracks ep and to complete it we called some friend and some guest to help us with vocals.
I think you want to play concerts in the future, so you’ll need a singer. Are you already searching for one? Who would be your favorite one for this job?
(Elvis) Not really, the pandemic has slowed down everything, so, we are concentrate on promotion. Surely, for the next album we’ll search for a singer. We’d like to find someone completely involved in a band… would be enough for us after a lot of bad experiences…
You could work with some famous musicians like David Reese (ex Accept/Bonfire), Fabio D’Amore (Serenity) and Alessia Scolletti (Temperance). Michele Guaitoli recorded and mixed the songs. How was it to work with them?
(Elvis) It was really easy because Michele, Fabio, Alessia and so, Claudio and Mattia are long time friends. We are from the same zone and with some of them, we grew up sharing the stages with our previous bands. About David Reece and Thomas Silver, we tried to contact them, knowing that they usually work as special guests, and so did with us too, very kindly…
I was able to ask Michele Guaitoli some questions about his work on the Desperation BLVD EP. How did you get in touch with the guys from Desperation BLVD and how did it work out with them? Are there any plans to cooperate again with them in the future?
(Michele) Alessandro and I are friends since a long time now, we’ve been in touch since 10 years at least and he’s always been following me and my projects but never had the chance to work together before in my studio. I even recorded some vocals for his other band, Revoltons. When he formed this new band we finally decided to join forces and to work on it together in my studio, The Groove Factory Studio in Udine, where the entire EP has been recorded, mixed and mastered. As said before there’s a strong friendship and a lot of professional respect between the two of us so not only it was really easy to cooperate, but it was also extremely natural and smooth. I don’t know if I am allowed to say anything about the future of Desperation BLVD, but what can be said for sure is that this is not the last time that Alex and I will have both our names on the same booklet.
What are the next projects for Desperation BLVD? A new single or an album?
(Elvis) Our original idea was to promote every song of the ep, to spread our name and create interest for the band. At the same time we are already working to our first full lengt album…
