Hallo Frieder, es freut mich sehr dich im Interview zu haben. Leider hab ich dich nicht mehr zusammen mit Sorrownight erleben können, aber du warst ja immer musikalisch bei ihnen präsent nicht zuletzt für die EP Acoasma. Nebenbei hast du nun dein Projekt Daimos gestartet und die erste Single “The Hunt” veröffentlicht, mit Veri Jumala als Vocalist.
Wie bist du auf diese Idee gekommen, Songs zu schreiben und dann die passenden Gastmusiker dafür einzuladen?
Es war ganz klar Rock ‘n Roll. Den Gedanken dazu, ein eigenes Album zu schreiben und aufzunehmen, hatte ich schon länger. Vor zwei Jahren haben sehr viele gute Musiker angefangen Soloalben aufzunehmen; mir war das jedoch zu langweilig. Gerade als Gitarrist wäre ein Soloalbum, in meinen Augen, wenig spektakulär gewesen.
Ich wollte einfach Musik machen und sie sollte rocken. Also dachte ich, wenn ich ein Album aufnehmen würde, dann mit so vielen Musikern, Genres und Ideen wie möglich.
Ich wollte mich einfach frei entfalten und den Spirit des Rock erkunden, ohne an irgendwelche Grenzen gebunden zu sein. Das wichtigste für mich ist das Gefühl, musikalischer Fortschritt und Abwechslung.
Welche musikalischen Richtungen werden die Songs für das angekündigte Album “Prism” haben?
Es gibt zehn Songs auf dem Album und jeder hat ein anderes Genre, von denen sich nicht jedes hundert Prozent in eine Schublade stecken lässt. Es sind alles Rock und Metal Richtungen, die ich je nach Lebenslage gern höre. Sollte ich die Songs irgendwie bezeichnen, dann so:

Schreibst du auch die Lyrics zu den Songs oder steuert die der jeweilige Gastsänger bei?
Die Songs sind anfangs instrumental entstanden. Textlich wollte ich meist nur das Thema vorgegeben, damit es inhaltlich zu den Melodien und Rythmen passt. Meist hatte ich schon eine konkrete Vorstellung davon, in welche Richtung sich das Ganze entwickeln sollte.
Für 8 von 10 Songs habe ich die Texte geschrieben, immer mit der Möglichkeit, dass der jeweilige Sänger, die Lyrics abwandeln und für sich interpretieren könnte.
Der Text zu “Dancing With The Devil” stammt von Ritchie Azul (Locked And Loaded) und für “Heaven Without You” von Tom Windberg (Claya).
Auch wenn du wahrscheinlich alle Musiker natürlich persönlich kennst, stelle ich mir die Auswahl trotzdem schwierig vor. Wie machst du das? Kannst du das anhand des ersten Songs “The Hunt” beschreiben?
Tatsächlich kenne ich nicht alle der Musiker persönlich. Als ich die Grundideen aufgenommen hatte, habe ich mir vorgestellt, welche Instrumente zu den jeweiligen Genres passen könnten, um der klassischen Rock Besetzung (Gitarre-Bass-Schlagzeug) zu entkommen und mehr Tiefe zu verleihen. Also habe ich mich umgehört.
Bei The Hunt war es genauso. Zum Beispiel das Banjo stammt von Ralf Sideburn (SIDEBÜRNS), einem tollen Musiker, den ich einfach angeschrieben habe, ob er nicht Lust hat das Projekt zu begleiten. Ein paar Wochen später, hat er mir seine Ideen geschickt und es hat gerockt!
Können sich die Gastmusiker auch mit eigenen Ideen zu den Songs einbringen?
Ja, absolut. Ich hatte zwar immer eine klare Vorstellung davon was ich will, aber Daimos sollte kein Soloalbum werden. So hatte jeder Musiker die Freiheit, ganz individuell seine Ideen einzubringen, mit der Option, auf meine Grundideen zurückzugreifen. Die Hauptsache war, dass es sich ehrlich anfühlt.
Die Produktion der Songs incl. Mixing und Mastering machst du selbst. Hast du ein eigenes Tonstudio zuhause?
Nein. Meiner Meinung nach zählt ein leistungsstarker PC, ein Interface und ein paar Gadgets noch nicht direkt als Homestudio. Ich bin zwar dabei aufzurüsten, jedoch habe ich für Prism den Mix nach meinem Gefühl vorbereitet und dann Kontakt zu erfahrenen Leuten aus der Musikbranche gesucht, die mich beraten haben, so dass ich das Ergebnis verbessern konnte. Dasselbe gilt fürs Mastering.
Nachdem dieses Projekt bedingt durch viele verschiedene Mitwirkende nicht den Weg auf eine Bühne finden wird, wie wirst du dafür Werbung machen? Wo kann man das Album dann hören bzw. kaufen?
Die Werbung geschieht größtenteils im Internet auf Social Media und relevanten Portalen. Hören können wird man es vor allem auf YouTube, wahrscheinlich auch Bandcamp und Streamcloud.
Ein Blick in die Zukunft, wirst du, egal wie erfolgreich das erste Album sein wird, dieses Projekt weiterführen? Arbeitest du auch noch an anderen Projekten?
Daimos wird für mich immer ein Herzensprojekt sein, so dass ich bereits an der Nachfolge des Albums arbeite. Allerdings ist noch nicht ganz klar, in welchem Rahmen das geschieht, also ob als EP, oder Album und welches Genre vertreten sein wird. Ein Konzeptalbum würde mich sehr reizen.
Nebenbei gibt es immer wieder geniale Projekte und Anfragen, bei denen ich gerne mitmache. Bei Orbit Room schreibe ich immer wieder neue Songs, zusammen mit meinem langjährigen Freund Robert Sann, der auch auf “Prism” sehr stark als Keyboarder vertreten ist und nicht nur sein Instrument perfekt beherrscht, sondern auch mit viel Feeling und Energie aufwarten kann.
Auch mit Veri Jumala ist ein weiteres Projekt im klassischen Dark Rock Stil geplant, auf das ich mich bereits sehr freue und für das sogar die ersten Ideen schon da sind.
Des Weiteren habe ich vor kurzem auf Anfrage an einem Song für einen Die Ärzte Sampler mitgearbeitet, der viel Potential hat.
Eine Frage für interessante bzw. lustige Antworten. Gab es eine lustige oder ungewöhnliche Begebenheit auf der Bühne oder im Studio in deinem bisherigen Musikerleben?
So viele, dass ich sie kaum mehr zählen kann. Es sind immer wieder Sachen passiert, bei denen man sich hinterher fragt, was eigentlich gerade passiert ist.
Ich bin zum Beispiel einmal ohne Instrument zur Probe aufgetaucht, einfach weil ich so im Zeitdruck war, dass ich in lauter Aufregung die Gitarre stehen ließ.
Als ungewöhnlichste Begebenheit fällt mir sofort die Banished And Gone Tour ein. Damals habe ich noch fest für SORROWNIGHT gespielt und es war sehr überraschend und ein einmaliges Gefühl, plötzlich eine Tour mit Florian Grey und Eyes Shut Tight spielen zu können, obwohl wir bis dahin kaum Auftritte hatten.
Auch bei den Album Aufnahmen gab es immer wieder schöne, aber auch aufregende Situationen, für die ich sehr dankbar bin.
Was machst du gerne, wenn du mal nicht mit Musik beschäftigt bist? Was sind deine Hobbies?
Das wichtigste für mich ist und bleibt kreative Energie, nur so geht es mir wirklich gut. Momentan schreibe ich an meinem zweiten Fantasy Roman, lese sehr viel und höre alle Arten von Rockmusik.
Gibt es noch etwas was du uns/deinen Fans erzählen möchtest?
Zu allererst möchte ich den grandiosen Musikern danken, die “Prism” überhaupt erst möglich gemacht haben. Sie alle haben so viel Arbeit und Herzblut reingesteckt – das ist einfach Wahnsinn! Es ist ein einmaliges Album geworden.
Wer sich für energetische Musik interessiert, sollte die Bands und Projekte der Musiker checken, die auf “Prism” mitgewirkt haben. Sie alle sind einzigartig und haben riesiges Potential.

Hi Frieder, I’m glad to have you in interview. Sadly I didn’t see you playing with Sorrownight, but you always were there to support them like on their EP Acoasma. Besides you started with your project Daimos and the first single „The Hunt“ is out now on Youtube, with Veri Jumala on vocals.
How did you come up with the idea of writing songs and inviting suitable guest musicians for the recording?
Clearly it was Rock’n Roll. I had this idea of writing and recording an own album in my mind for a long time. Two years ago many excellent musicians started to produce solo albums; I found that boring. As a guitarist doing a solo album wouldn’t have been something incredible in my eyes.
I just wanted to make music and it should rock. So I thought if I were going to record an album, it would be with as many musicians, genres and ideas as possible.
I wanted to set me free and explore the spirit of Rock without any limits. The most important thing for me is the feeling of musical progress and variety.
What musical directions will the songs have for the announced album Prism?
There are ten songs on the album and each one has a different genre, not everyone can be exactly pigeonholed. They are all rock and metal directions that I like to listen to depending on my life situation. If I should describe the songs somehow, then like this:

Do you also write the lyrics to the songs or is it the guest singer’s part to do it?
The songs are instrumental at the beginning. Lyrically, I usually only wanted to set the theme so that it fits the content of the melodies and rhythms. Most of the time I already had a concrete idea of the direction in which the whole thing should develop.
For 8 out of 10 songs I wrote the lyrics, always with the possibility that the guest singer could modify the lyrics and interpret them for himself.
The lyrics to Dancing With The Devil are by Ritchie Azul (Locked And Loaded) and for Heaven Without You by Tom Windberg (Claya).
Even if you probably know all the musicians personally, I still imagine the selection is difficult. How do you do that? Can you describe that from the first song, The Hunt?
In fact, I don’t know all of the musicians personally. When I recorded the basic ideas, I imagined which instruments could fit the respective genres to escape the classic rock line-up (guitar-bass drums) and give it more depth. So I asked around.
It was the same with “The Hunt”. For example, the banjo comes from Ralf Sideburn (SIDEBÜRNS), a great musician, whom I simply wrote to if he would like to accompany the project. A few weeks later, he sent me his ideas and it rocked!
Can the guest musicians also contribute their own ideas to the songs?
Yes, absolutely. I always had a clear idea of what I wanted, but Daimos was not supposed to be a solo album. So each musician had the freedom to contribute his ideas individually with the option to go back to my basic ideas. The main thing was that it feels honest.
You do the production of the songs including mixing and mastering yourself. Do you have your own recording studio at home?
No. In my opinion, a powerful PC, an interface and a few gadgets do not yet count directly as a home studio. Although I am in the process of upgrading, I prepared the mix for Prism according to my feelings and then searched contact to experienced people from the music industry who advised me so that I could improve the result. The same applies to mastering.
Since this project will not find its way to a stage due to many different contributors, how will you advertise it? Where can we listen to or buy the album?
Most of the advertising takes place on the Internet on social media and relevant portals. You will be able to hear it mainly on YouTube, probably also Bandcamp and Streamcloud.
A look into the future, no matter how successful the first album will be, will you continue this project? Are you also working on other projects?
Daimos will always be a project close to my heart, so I am already working on the follow-up to the album. However, it’s not clear yet in what framework this will happen, as an EP or album and which genre will be represented. I would love to produce a concept album.
By the way, there are always ingenious projects and inquiries in which I like to participate. At Orbit Room I always write new songs, together with my long-time friend Robert Sann, who is also very strongly represented on Prism as a keyboarder and not only masters his instrument perfectly, but also come up with a lot of feeling and energy.
Also with Veri Jumala another project in the classic Dark Rock style is planned, which I am already looking forward to and the first ideas are already done.
Furthermore, I recently worked on a song for a “Die Ärzte” sampler on request, which has a lot of potential.
A question for interesting or funny answers. Has there been a funny or unusual situation on stage or in studio in your musical life so far?
So many that I can hardly count them anymore. Things have happened again and again, where you wonder afterwards what actually happened.
For example, I once went to rehearsal without an instrument, simply because I was so pressed for time that I left the guitar at home.
The most unusual event immediately comes to my mind is the Banished And Gone Tour. I was still playing for SORROWNIGHT and it was very surprising and a unique feeling suddenly to be able to play a tour with Florian Grey and Eyes Shut Tight, although we had hardly any performances until then.
Also with the album recordings there were always beautiful but also exciting situations, for which I am very grateful.
What do you like to do when you’re not busy with music? What are your hobbies?
The most important thing for me is and remains creative energy, only then I feel really well. At the moment I’m writing my second fantasy novel, reading a lot and listening to all kinds of rock music.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us/your fans?
First of all, I would like to thank the great musicians who made Prism possible in the first place. They all have put so much work and heart and soul into it – that’s just amazing! It has become a unique album.
