Interview mit George Downloved von Saddolls (von E.Wiesinger)
Als Erstes würde ich gerne etwas über eure musikalischen Anfänge erfahren. Gab es einen speziellen Moment, wo ihr gesagt habt, das ist es was wir für den Rest unseres Lebens tun wollen?
George: Die Band ist eher wie ein Hobby für uns. Sie ist nicht unser Hauptjob, da wir nicht davon leben. Es ist einfach etwas das wir lieben. Zu unseren Wurzeln, die meisten Mitglieder unserer Band sind Fans der finnischen Musikszene. Künstler wie The 69 Eyes, Sentenced, Poisonblack, To/Die/For, Charon und natürlich HIM. Wir waren wie diese Musikverrückten, die den gleichen Musikstil mochten und beschlossen aus reiner Zuneigung für sie unsere Band zu gründen. Unsere Band besteht seit 15 Jahren und ja, man kann sagen, wir machen unser halbes Leben lang schon Musik.
Die Gothic Metal Szene in Griechenland ist klein, trotzdem habt ihr beschlossen diesen Musikstil für die Saddolls zu wählen. Was war der Grund dafür?
George: Weil wir einfach Fans sind. Wir wollten das immer schon tun und daher tun wir es. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, eine andere Musikrichtung zu spielen. Die Szene ist vielleicht sehr, sehr klein hier in Griechenland aber wir haben treue Fans und Freunde hier, die uns unterstützen und unsere Musik lieben. Wir sind glücklich damit.
Ihr habt als Coverband begonnen. Welche Bands habt ihr gecovert? Sind diese Bands immer noch eure Idole?
George: Unser Musikgeschmack hat sich vielleicht etwas verändert über die Jahre, aber die Bands, die wir gecovert haben, haben uns dahin gebracht, wo wir heute stehen und sie werden immer in unseren Herzen bleiben wie eine süße nostalgische Melancholie. Wir haben viele Bands gecovert, am meisten HIM, The 69 Eyes, Amorphis, For My Pain, Paradise Lost, Rammstein, Apoptygma Berzerk und einige andere. Unsere ersten 7 Shows bestanden zum Hauptteil aus Coversongs dieser Bands und nur ein paar eigenen Songs. Heute ist es wie eine Tradition für uns mindestens einen Coversong auf unseren Konzerten zu spielen.
Nun zur Gegenwart. Ihr habt Anfang Oktober die Single „Call Me Pain“ begleitet von einem wunderschönen Video veröffentlicht. Wie lief der Videodreh in diesen schwierigen Zeiten ab und wie kam es zu der Zusammenarbeit mit dem griechischen Topmodel Marianna Painesi?
George: Das Kuriose an diesem Clip ist, dass wir ihn zweimal drehen mussten. Der erste Versuch fand einen Monat vor dem ersten Lockdown statt, und wir drehten die Szenen mit Marianna und einige Bandaufnahmen. 10 Tage später war die erste grobe Bearbeitung des Films beendet und es sah grottenschlecht aus. Nur die Modelaufnahmen waren in Ordnung und zu bearbeiten, der Rest der Bandperformance war nicht zu gebrauchen. Nachdem der Lockdown aufgehoben wurde, entschieden wir uns die Bandaufnahmen nochmal mit einem anderen talentierten Regisseur (Bob Katsionis) zu drehen. Kombiniert mit den bereits vorhandenen Model Aufnahmen aus dem ersten Versuch war nun das finale Video so, wie wir uns das von Anfang an vorgestellt hatten. Es war uns ein Vergnügen mit unserer engen Freundin Marianna Painesi zusammenzuarbeiten. Wir kennen uns seit 2012 und sind sehr glücklich, dass sie uns freudig zugesagt hat, als wir sie fragten.
Songwriting allgemein – wie funktioniert das bei den Saddolls? Macht ihr das zusammen, die Melodie und den Text, oder gibt es einen bestimmten Ablauf wie z.B. erst die Melodie und dann die Lyriks? Sind alle in den Prozess miteinbezogen?
George: Die meisten Songs werden von unserem Gitarristen Paul komponiert. Er macht die Keyboards auch zusammen mit unserem Studio Keyboarder Sean. Dann kommen die anderen dazu und fügen ihre Parts und Extras ein. Ich bekomme dann die finale Version und kreiere meinen Gesang und den Text dazu.
Wie in einer Familie ist nicht immer jeder glücklich, wie manche Dinge erledigt werden. Wie geht ihr mit Unstimmigkeiten in der Band um?
George: Ja, das ist eine lange Geschichte. Am Ende finden wir immer einen Weg, aber es ist nicht immer einfach. Wir hatten unsere Meinungsverschiedenheiten und das war ein Grund für die vielen Wechsel von Bandmitgliedern in all den Jahren. Aber meistens deshalb, weil ein bestimmtes Mitglied die Band gebremst hat oder nicht fähig war, sich der Band hingebungsvoll zu widmen, oder sich seine musikalischen Vorlieben änderten. Ich bin wirklich glücklich, weil wir nun seit 2017 das gleiche Lineup haben und es wirklich gut funktioniert. Wir alle haben unseren Platz in der Band gefunden (neben den musikalischen Dingen), das heißt einer kümmert sich um social Media, ein anderer ist für den Merch zuständig, der nächste erledigt die Grafikdesigns, wieder ein anderer fungiert als Manager und kümmert sich um die Buchungen.
Ihr habt schon einige Demo Songs in der Schublade. Werdet ihr zurück ins Studio gehen, sobald die Situation es wieder erlaubt?
George: Ja definitiv, wir haben 8 oder 9 Songs in der frühen Vorproduktionsphase, es fehlen nur noch die Lyriks, der Gesang und der letzte Feinschliff. Sobald es wieder möglich ist, werden wir zurück ins Studio gehen und eine neue Single produzieren.
Was sind eure weiteren Pläne für die Zukunft?
George: Wir wollen nicht zu weit vorausschauen. Was 2021 betrifft liegt unser Schwerpunkt darauf, so viele Shows wie möglich spielen zu können. Covid ist wirklich schrecklich und sperrt die Menschen ein, keiner kann etwas tun. Wenn das vorbei ist, bin ich sicher, dass die Leute die Clubs und Konzerthallen wieder füllen werden. Ich glaube, dass es eine Explosion von Liveshows für jede Band geben wird, die Konzerte spielen möchte.

George: Versucht sicher und gesund zu bleiben, und wenn das alles vorbei ist, werden wir mit euch zusammen sein, mit neuer Musik und vielen aufregenden Shows mit unseren besten Songs.

First of all I’m interested in your musical roots. Did you have this special moment where you said this is what we want to do for the rest of our lifes?
GEORGE: This band thing is more like a hobby to us, it is not our main job because we don’t make a living from it, it is just something that we love to do. Concerning our roots, most of the members in this band are fans of the Finnish music scene, artists like The 69 Eyes, Sentenced, Poisonblack, To/Die/for, Charon and off course HIM. We were like these geeks that liked the same music style and decided to make this band out of pure affection for those bands. We have this band for 15 years now, so yes you can say that we are doing this for half of our lives now.
The gothic metal scene in Greece is a small one, nethertheless you decided to choose this musicstyle for Saddolls. What was the reason for it?
GEORGE: Because we are just plain fans. This is what we always wanted to do and this is what we are doing. I cannot imagine myself doing a different genre. The scene may be small to non existend here in Greece but we have true fans and friends here who support us and love our music so we are happy with it.
You were a cover band in the beginning. Which songs/bands did you cover? Are these bands still your idols?
GEORGE: Our musical tastes may have a bit evolved through the years but the bands we covered and got us where we are will always be in our hearts like a sweet nostalgic melancholy. We covered many bands, most of the HIM disography, The 69 Eyes, Amorphis, For My Pain, Paradise Lost, Rammstein, Apoptygma Berzerk and many others. Our first 7 shows cotained mostly covers from these bands and only a few of our own songs, and nowdays it is like a tradition to us to include at least on cover song in our gigs.
Now to the presence. You released „Call Me Pain“ in the beginning of october acompanied with an amazing video. How did it work out to shoot the clip in these difficult times and the cooperation with the greek top model Marianna Painesi?
GEORGE: The curious thing about this clip is that we had to shoot it twice, the first attempt was a month before the first lockdown, and we shot the scenes with Marianna and some band performance. Then 10 days later we had the first rough edit of the clip that looked God awful. Only the model scenes were legit and workable, the rest of the band performance was just unusable, so when the lockdown was over, we decided to re-shoot the band performance with a different and talented director (Bob Katsionis), combined with the shots we had with the model from the previous shoot, so the released outcome was exactely what we wanted since the beginning. It was our pleasure to work with Marianna Painesi which is a dear friend of us since 2012 or something, so we asked her and she kindly accepted and we are so glad that she did.
Songwriting in general. How does that work in Saddolls? Are you doing it together, melody and lyrics, or is there a specific way like first melody and then lyrics? Are you all involved in the songwriting process?
GEORGE: Most of our songs are composed by our guitarist Paul. He does the keyboards as well along with our studio keyboarder Sean. Then the other members gather and add their parts and extras. Then i get the final instrumental projet and i do my best to compose the vocal lines and add the lyrics.
Like in a family there’s not always everyone happy with the way things are getting done. How do you manage disagreements in the band?
GEORGE: Well that is a long talk. We always find our way to manage things in the end but it is not always roses and violets. We have our disagreements and this is the reason we changed so many members in all those years. But it was mostly done because a certain member may have been slowing the band down, or not being able to be devoted in the cause, or even a change in the musical preferences. But I am really happy becaue we have the same line up since 2017 and it seems to work out just fine. We all have our places cleared in the band (besides the musical stuff) for example one is managing the social, an other is managing the merchandise, or another does some graphic designs, or another manages bookings and serves as a manager.
You already have some demo songs finished. So will you go back to the studio once the situation allows that again?
GEORGE: Yes definitely, we have like 8 or 9 songs in early pre production stages, they are lacking lyrics and vocal lines, and final touches. So when all this situation is managed we will surely enter the studio to compose a new single.
What other plans do you have for the future?
GEORGE: We dont like to look far, so concerning 2021, what we mostly seek is live shows, as many as possible, a while this Covid thing is really agressive and has the people locked up, not free to do anything , when it passes I am sure that people will be filling the clubs and live venues so I guess it will be a explosion of live shows for every band out there that is eager to seek them.

GEORGE: Try to stay safe and healty out there, and when this is all over we will be back with you with new music and many shows featuring exciting stuff from our discography.
