Interview mit Mikko Heino (Rylos) von Elisabeth Wiesinger
Ihr seid in verschiedenen Orten in Finnland zuhause, wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
Eine lange Geschichte, Rylos hat hart daran gearbeitet, die richtigen Bandmitglieder zu finden. Wir haben jedes Jahr ein Album produziert und sind seit 2016 in Finnland getourt. Während dieser Zeit hat es einige Wechsel in der Band gegeben. Erst in diesem Jahr hat sich das geändert und die jetzige Besetzung fühlt sich richtig an. Der „Hunger“ in der Band wurde gefunden.
Ist jeder in das Songwriting eingebunden? Wenn ja, wie lässt sich das mit unterschiedlichen Wohnorten bewerkstelligen?
Für gewöhnlich beginne ich mit den Basics wie Akkorde, Melodie und den ersten Lyriks. Dann schicke ich ein Akkustikdemo an die anderen und wir machen den Song zusammen fertig. Jeder erledigt seinen eigenen Teil und so funktioniert das Wunder. Auf den Solarworks Alben ist es etwas anders, hier hat der Songwriter/Produzent und guter Freund Mikko Hämäläinen die Song-Historie geschrieben und die Gitarren mit uns arrangiert. Ein Traum wurde wahr mit Mikko zusammen Songs zu schreiben, weil wir beide zuvor in der Band Doodah waren und wir uns bereits aus Kindertagen kennen. Er ist ein unglaubliches Talent im Produzieren von Songs und unsere musikalische Chemie mehr als stimmig. Ich erkannte es bereits 1995, als ich der Doodah Band beitrat. Rylos hat auch Doodah Hits in neuen Versionen aufgenommen, wie Post Human Power Station, Into The Gutter, Pure Energy. Meine und Mikko Hämäläinen’s Musikvergangenheit wird in Rylos weiterleben. Ich variiere die Arbeit an Songs gerne, um das Verlangen nach neuer Musik für uns frisch zu halten.
Wie läuft das mit den Proben ab?
Wir haben die Möglichkeit in Lappeenranta, Kotka und Kouvola zu proben, aber für gewöhnlich tun wir es in Lappeenranta in Misca’s Proberaum.
Die Arbeit mit einem blinden Drummer ist bestimmt etwas Spezielles. Wie läuft die Interaktion mit Misca ab?
Es läuft sehr unkompliziert mit Misca. Er ist ein außergewöhnlicher Mensch, ein toller Drummer und sehr talentiert. Misca glaubt an seinen Traum und er ist ein gutes Beispiel für jeden. Wenn du an Träume glaubst und deinen Weg gehst, kannst du alles erreichen. Es ist eine gute Einstellung, die wir gerne teilen. Miscas Vater spielt eine große Rolle in seinem Leben und erleichtert uns vieles. Misca ist ein toller Kerl, mit einem wunderbaren Vater und ebensolcher Familie!
Was hat euch zu eurem Bandnamen Rylos und The Carrot Rock inspiriert?
Der Name Rylos fiel mir in den frühen 2000er ein, als ich kurze Zeit in einer unbekannten Prog Band dabei war. Die Band hieß Rylot und dieser Name blieb mir im Kopf. 2013 entschied ich die Rockband Rylos zu gründen, mit der ich meine Kindheitsträume Heavy Metal und 8-bit-Video Spiele (Adventure of Rylos – Solarworks the Game) verwirklichen kann. Als ich Rylos gründete, hielt ich einen Rückblick in die 80er Jahre. Zu dieser Zeit hörte ich viel Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Def Leppard. Ich wusste genau welche Art von Musik ich schreiben wollte. Außerdem wollte ich auch meine Band Historie Doodah und Evidence ehren, die Rock/Heavy Musik repräsentieren. Es gibt eine Menge guter Songs aus dieser Zeit und wir haben einige Versionen von Doodah und Evidence Songs eingespielt. Beispielsweise auf dem ersten Rylos Album „Game Theory“ ist der Song „Real World“ eine eigene Version des Evidence Songs. Das sind die Elemente mit denen die Carrot-Rock Band Rylos gegründet wurde. Der Rest ist Geschichte.
Mikko, du bist nicht nur der Kopf von Rylos, du singst in der Band Minutian, hast dein eigenes Soloproject und nicht zuletzt einen Vollzeitjob. Wie schaffst du das alles?
Ich muss natürlich einen Terminkalender führen, für Familie, Arbeit und Musik, aber Musik ist meine große Leidenschaft und es findet sich immer Zeit dafür. Manchmal fallen mir auch Songideen ein, wenn ich die Zeit mit meiner Tochter zusammen im Park im Sandkasten verbringe. Musik zu kreieren, ist nicht an bestimmte Orte gebunden. Ich habe jederzeit Musik in meinem Kopf.
Am 22.11. werdet ihr wieder einen Livestream spielen. Welches Gefühl ist das für euch kein Feedback vom Publikum zu erhalten?
Diesen Livestream spielen zu können, freut uns wahnsinnig, und wir sind schon sehr aufgeregt. Wir werden eine Auswahl unserer Songs aus allen Alben spielen. Natürlich sind die Reaktionen des Publikums bei einem Konzert das Wichtigste und sie halten die Band am Leben. Aufgrund der sich verschlechternden Covid-19 Situation ist jedoch nur ein Livestream-Gig möglich. Vor allem aus moralischer Sicht und weil Rylos nicht unser Hauptjob ist. Es ist ein einzigartiger Gig, die einzige Möglichkeit Rylos jetzt live zu erleben.
Kannst du uns schon etwas über eure Pläne für nächstes Jahr erzählen?
Anfang nächsten Jahres gehen wir wieder ins Astia-Studio, um einen Song mit Anssi Kippo aufzunehmen. Neue Rylos Musik ist also auf dem Weg und wir hoffen, auf Tour gehen zu können, sobald die Situation es wieder erlaubt. Wie auch immer, das nächste Jahr ist für uns ein neuer Anfang in vielerlei Hinsicht. Wir werden sehen was die Zukunft uns bringt.

You all are from different cities, so how did you meet up?
A long story because Rylos worked hard to find this lineup. Rylos has made albums every year and toured Finland since 2016, during the time there have been a lot of member changes. Only now during the year has the situation calmed down and the line-up now feels right and the right hungry inside the band have been found.
Are you all involved in songwriting for Rylos? And if so how do you manage it because you all life in different cities.
Well, I usually make the base of the song with the chords, the melody and the first step in the lyrics. Then I send an acoustic demo to the band and then we make the song ready together, every member make their own parts and that’s how the magic happen. At Solarworks albums, the story is a little different when songwriter / record producer/ Good Friend Mikko Hämäläinen wrote the story, arranged the guitars with us. It was a dream come true to make songs with Mikko because we have the history of the Doodah band and we are childhood friends, he is an incredible talent in songmaking and our musical chemistry is top notch, I knew that already in 1995 when I joined the Doodah band. Rylos has also made versions of Doodah hits, Post Human PowerStation, Into The Gutter, Pure Energy so Rylos respects my and Mikko Hämäläinen music history all the time. I always want to do things differently that keeps us hungry for music and that things are fresh for us.
Also how is it with rehearsals?
We have the opportunity to training in Lappeenranta, Kotka and Kouvola, but we usually training in the Lappeenranta in Misca’s rehearsing room
I think working with a blind drummer is something special. Can you tell us more about your interaction with Misca?
Really easy going person, Misca is an awesome person, amazing drummer and super talent. Misca believes in his dreams and is a good example for everyone. When you believe in dreams and go in that direction, so that it can be achieved. It’s a good value and that’s nice to share. Misca’s father doing a big role for Misca and he makes things easy for us. How did you come up with your bandname and the carrot rock?
The name Rylos came in the early 2000s in Jyväskylä when I had joined an unnamed prog band but it didn’t work. The band was named Rylot and this name stayed in my mind and in 2013 I decided to form a rock band Rylos, which I support my childhood favorites. Heavy metal and 8-bit video games. When I founded Rylos, I looked in the mirror, that took me back to the ’80s when I listened a lot to Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Def Leppard. I knew exactly what kind of music I had to create. I also wanted to do honor my own band history, „Doodah“ and „Evidence,“ which represented rock/heavy music. There are a lot of good songs from that period and we’ve done versions of Doodah and Evidence songs. Example, the first Rylos album “ Game Theory“ has a „Real World“ song made to Evidence. Rylos made his own version of it and it has little different from the original. Those are the elements how the carrot-rock band Rylos was born. Rest is history
Mikko, you’re not only the leader of Rylos also you are singer in Minutian, do your own soloproject and at least have a fulltime job. How do you manage it?
I need to be able to organize schedules, family, day job and music but music is my big passion and there is always time for that. Sometimes song ideas are created even with my daughter in the sandbox of the park, creating music doesn’t look at the place. I make music in my head all the time.
You’ll do a livestream soon again. What kind of feeling is that for you without getting feedback from a real audience?
It’s so great to do a stream gig, we’re really excited about this. We play songs all of our albums. Feedback is very important to us and the audience is most important and keeps us alive. The covid-19 situation is getting worse, so a stream gig is the only right way to make gigs right now, morally, especially because Rylos is not our day job. But this is a very unique gig, the only way to see the Rylos now.
Can you already tell us what’s coming up next year?
Begin of next year we go again to Astia -Studio to record a new song with Anssi Kippo. So,new Rylos music coming also next year and hopefully we can get the touring if the world situation allows it. But anyways, next year is a like a new beginning in many ways. We’ll see what future holds.
