Hi Alex, nice to meet you! How did you discover me and what was the reason for you to contact me?
Nice to meet you too! I saw you on Instagram and wondered that you would like to check out our music!
Haha, yes I did it and here we are now!!
You formed Rock-Criminals 10 years ago. Tell us something about how you met up with the other guys and introduce the other bandmembers to us. Which bands/artists influence you the most?
Alex: I met our bass player Mike Scott when we were in middle school and I thought that he had a cool mohawk, haha! Then I asked him to join the first line up-of Rock-Criminals and that’s how it all started. Couple of years later drummer Luke Eaton joined our band and in 2016 our line-up was completed when guitar player JS joined our band. You could say that the rest is history!
We all listen to very different genres of music but as a band the main influences are definitely in punk rock. Ramones has been a huge influence for us as an attitude. Personally I have always loved bands like Guns n’ Roses and Hanoi Rocks and their music has given me so much!
Who came up with your bandname and has it a special meaning for you?
Alex: I came up with it when I was 12. I thought that Rock-Criminals sounds cool and it gave me kinda punk vibes. We also act like criminals on stage so it’s a perfect name for a wild live band like us, haha!
Your band is based in Hamina, but actually only one bandmember lives there. How is that working with rehearsals and everything bandrelated in general?
Alex: It has worked fine. We practise about once a month nowadays so living in different cities is not a problem for us. Some months we have more band meetings and stuff but during this pandemic we have learned to use things like Discord to communicate!
You already released several singles and an EP. How is your songwriting process working? Are you doing that together? What inspires you to the song lyrics?
Alex: Usually we make music together with our guitar player JS. Both of us have some ideas and then we combine them. We have some kind of Jagger/Richards relationship in writing music. Arrangements are made together with the band.
I do most of the song lyrics and usually I’m inspired about my everyday life and what is happening around me. I wanna write about things that are real because that makes music authentic for me.
For your latest single „Red Roses“ you had Juska Salminen (HIM / To/Die/For) on board. Who had the idea for it and how did you meet up with the former HIM keyboarder? Was it easy to work with him?
Alex: The first demo of the song was made in 2018 but we finished the song last year. The song talks about breaking up and it’s based on a true story. We had met Juska in Rock Academy Kouvola band coaching program and we thought that Red Roses really needed some keyboards to support the message. Then we asked Juska and he said yes. The song came out perfectly and we are so happy about it! Go check it out now!

How is it to work with the young guys from Rock-Criminals on a song? Did it remind you on the time you played in HIM?
Juska: Can’t say that it did in a sense that way were always on the road. Rock Academy project was 2 years. My part was to coordinate it, so quite a lot of producing all together. And as well being a youth leader, which was really important part. I guess that reminded me bit of HIM times, but now being a manager. Unfortunately we had only one show in Jyväskylä with both bands, RC and Another Hot Spring, before Corona. But to organize everything, it’s like being a manager.
I got in touch with several young bands and have the feeling they are really grounded professionals and know excactly what they want to achieve and most important, they know this is hard work. Something that impresses me very much. It wasn’t always like that I think. Is that also your opinion?
Juska: I think it’s exactly how you describe it. I mean they are not professionals yet, but I guess you mean that they think like professionals? It’s not in style to get drunk and smash stuff. That kind of rock is not in fashion at least at the moment. And it’s the sam thing amongst youngsters in general, I think. But yes, I consider young musicians to understand how much does it really need to get on the top. And as well of the possibility that stardom wont possibly happen. It still doesn’t prevent them of trying. Anthing can happen to anyone. It happend to me, even I didn’t reach to rock.
I’m sure you see big potential in the band. What do you think are the most important things a young band should be focused on to become successful in the music business?
Juska: To start with, it’s the rehearsing a lot. But that comes without saying. Nowadays one needs a business mind t think. So like Aleksi has done a lot already, it’s to get connected to people. That is how you get noticed. You can have the best potential, but there are massive amount of other bands. So that one magical moment, one connection to right person, and the history is made. As a middle-aged man, I don’t want to say social media skills, but that is what you need. So basically band itself needs skills to market, to manage, to connect. I don’t know… It’s not enough if you are multi instrumental, now you have to be multi talent in everything in the business.
But hey, in the end it’s all about music. If one makes a killer tune, that could lead you to success.
Are you going to do such a collaboration again and who would be your dream come true artist for it?
Alex: We’ve had a privilege to work together with Michael Monroe who is one of our all time idols. We met him in 2018 when we were part of the X Factor Finland and we have been keeping touch ever since. We have something really cool coming up at some point…
You are young guys, so I think you are used to get in touch with your fans and also gain new ones on several social media channels. I’ve heard you also use TikTok besides Facebook and Instagram. Tell us more about it.
Alex: TikTok rocks, haha! It’s been so sad that we cannot do any shows now so we have tried to come up with ideas to connect with our fans and possibly get some new ones aboard. I started doing some TikToks about our band and we’ve had really nice feedback there! I think that bands really should try different social media platforms because the fans are there as well! Try it out!
What are your next steps? Single releases or maybe a full album? Where do you see Rock-Criminals in 5 years?
Alex: We are gonna release singles but our main goal is to get signed to a record label now. Possibly in 5 years we have an album out and we are touring all across Europe!
By the way, can you remember a funny situation on stage or in the studio?
Alex: In Rock-Criminals every situation is more likely a funny situation, haha! One of the funniest one was when we played one of our biggest shows in Nosturi, Helsinki and about 20 minutes before the show our drummer Luke notices that he has forgotten his drum pedals to home! At that point it wasn’t so funny but luckily we borrowed pedals from another band and the show was a killer one! So it all came out great!
Do you have other interests/hobbies besides music?
Alex: I’m personally really into sports and I play tennis whenever I can. Luke loves to repair different kinds of cars and JS does a lot of live streaming on Twitch. Mike also loves to play video games so we all have stuff to do in our spare time!

Hallo Alex, schön dich kennenzulernen! Wie bist du auf mich aufmerksam geworden und was hat dich dazu bewogen, mich zu kontaktieren?
Alex: Schön dich auch kennenzulernen! Ich habe dein Profil auf Instagram gesehen und dachte mir, du willst vielleicht unsere Musik kennenlernen!
Ja, da hast du vollkommen recht!
Ihr habt Rock-Criminals vor 10 Jahren gegründet. Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt und wer sind die anderen Bandmitglieder? Welche Bands/Künstler beeinflussen euch am meisten?
Alex: Ich habe unseren Bassisten Mike Scott in der Mittelschule kennengelernt und ich dachte mir, er hat einen coolen Mohawk, haha! Ich fragte ihn, ob er in der Band dabei sein will und damit begann alles. Ein paar Jahre später kam Schlagzeuger Luke Eaton dazu und 2016 dann noch unser Gitarrist JS und unsere Band war komplett. Man könnte sagen, der Rest ist Geschichte!
Wir hören alle sehr unterschiedliche Musikgenres, aber als Band sind unsere Haupteinflüsse im Punk Rock zu finden. Die Ramones haben einen großen Einfluss in Bezug auf unsere allgemeine Einstellung. Ich persönlich liebe Bands wie Guns n‘ Roses und Hanoi Rocks, ihre Musik gibt mir so viel!
Wer hatte die Idee für den Bandnamen und hat er eine spezielle Bedeutung für euch?
Alex: Ich hatte die Idee als ich 12 Jahre alt war. Ich fand, dass Rock-Criminals cool klingt und es gab mir so etwas wie Punk-Feeling. Wir benehmen uns auf der Bühne wie „Kriminelle“, somit ist es ein perfekter Name für eine wilde Liveband, haha!!
Eure Band ist in Hamina zuhause, aber aktuell lebt nur ein Bandmitglied dort. Wie macht ihr das mit Bandproben und allem was die Band betrifft generell?
Alex: Es funktioniert sehr gut. Wir proben derzeit ungefähr einmal im Monat, also ist es kein Problem, dass wir in verschiedenen Städten leben. Manchmal haben wir mehr Bandtreffen, aber während der Pandemie haben wir gelernt, zum Beispiel auf Discord miteinander zu kommunizieren!
Ihr habt schon einige Singles und eine EP veröffentlicht. Wie läuft das bei euch mit Songwriting? Macht ihr das zusammen? Was inspiriert euch zu den Songtexten?
Alex: Gewöhnlich schreibe ich zusammen mit unserem Gitarristen JS die Songs. Wir beide haben die Ideen und kombinieren diese dann. Unsere Partnerschaft kann man mit Jagger/Richards beim Songschreiben vergleichen. Die Arrangements erledigen wir alle zusammen mit der Band.
Ich schreibe viele Songtexte und meistens werde ich durch Alltägliches und was um mich herum passiert inspiriert. Ich möchte über die Dinge des Lebens schreiben, weil das die Musik authentisch macht für mich.
Für eure aktuelle Single „Red Roses“ hattet ihr Unterstützung durch Juska Salminen (HIM / To/Die/For). Wer hatte die Idee dafür und wie habt ihr den ehemaligen HIM Keyboarder kennengelernt? Wie war die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm?
Alex: Das erste Demo dieses Songs wurde 2018 produziert, wir haben den Song aber erst letztes Jahr fertiggestellt. Es geht im Song um eine Trennung und der Text beruht auf einer wahren Story. Wir trafen Juska beim Rock Academy Kouvola Bandcoaching Programm und fanden, dass Red Roses eine Keyboard Begleitung zur Unterstützung der Message braucht. Wir fragten Juska und er sagte zu. Der Song war damit perfekt, und wir sind wirklich sehr glücklich darüber! Hört es euch an!

Wie ist es mit den Jungs von Rock-Criminals an einem Song zu arbeiten? Hat es dich an die Zeit erinnert, in der du bei HIM gespielt hast?
Juska: Ich kann nicht sagen, dass es mich daran erinnerte, weil wir viel unterwegs waren. Das Rock Academy Projekt lief über 2 Jahre. Meine Aufgabe bestand darin alles zu koordinieren, es war vieles aufeinander abzustimmen. Und ein wichtiger Teil war es, die jungen Leute zu führen. Ich glaube, das hat mich ein wenig an die HIM Zeiten erinnert, aber jetzt in der Rolle als Manager. Leider konnten wir nur eine Show in Jyväskylä mit den beiden Bands Rock-Criminals und Another Hot Spring spielen, bevor Corona kam. Alles zu organisieren, ist wie ein Manager zu sein.
Ich habe schon einige junge Bands kennengelernt und muss sagen, dass sie alle sehr geerdete Profis sind und genau wissen was sie erreichen wollen und das Wichtigste, sie wissen es ist harte Arbeit. Etwas was mir sehr imponiert. Ich glaube, das war nicht immer so. Ist das auch deine Meinung?
Juska: Ja, es ist genauso wie du es beschreibst. Ich meine, sie sind noch keine Profis, aber du meinst sicher, sie denken wie Profis? Es ist nicht in Mode sich zu betrinken und Dinge zu zerstören. Diese Rock Manieren sind zur Zeit nicht mehr in. Und das trifft auch für die jungen Bands zu. Aber ja, ich schätze die jungen Musiker verstehen, wieviel man dafür tun muss, um nach oben zu kommen. Und natürlich auch, dass sie vielleicht nie berühmt sein werden. Es hält sie nicht davon ab, es zu versuchen. Alles ist möglich. Es geschah bei mir, obwohl ich es nicht direkt angestrebt hatte.
Ich bin mir sicher, dass du großes Potenzial in der Band siehst. Was sind die wichtigsten Dinge, auf die sich eine junge Band konzentrieren sollte, um im Musikgeschäft erfolgreich zu sein?
Juska: Am Anfang ist das Wichtigste viel zu üben. Aber das tun die Meisten, das muss man nicht sagen. Heutzutage braucht man Geschäftssinn denke ich. Aleksi hat schon eine Menge getan, um mit Leuten in Kontakt zu kommen. So bekommt man Aufmerksamkeit. Du kannst total begabt sein, aber es gibt so viele andere Bands, die es auch sind. Es braucht den magischen Moment, eine Verbindung zur richtigen Person, und es ist vollbracht. Als Mann im besten Alter möchte ich nicht sagen, Social Media Erfahrung ist alles, aber das braucht man heute. Die Band selbst muss die Fähigkeiten haben sich zu vermarkten, zu managen, Kontakt zu halten. Ich weiß nicht ….. es ist nicht genug, wenn du ein musikalisches Multitalent bist, jetzt musst du ein Multitalent in allem in diesem Geschäft sein.
Aber, am Ende ist die Musik das Wichtigste. Wenn man einen Killersong hat, dann kann es dich zum Erfolg führen.

Alex: Wir hatten das Privileg mit Michael Monroe, einem unserer größten Idole, zusammenzuarbeiten. Wir trafen ihn 2018 als wir bei X Factor Finland dabei waren und wir sind in Kontakt geblieben. Es ist etwas wirklich Großes mit ihm geplant in der Zukunft …
Ich denke, ihr jungen Leute seid es gewöhnt, mit euren Fans auf verschiedenen Social Media Kanälen in Kontakt zu bleiben und dort auch neue Fans zu gewinnen. Ich habe gehört, dass ihr neben Facebook und Instagram auch auf TikTok zu finden seid. Erzähl uns mehr darüber.
Alex: TikTok rocks, haha!! Es ist sehr traurig, dass wir keine Shows spielen können und so haben wir versucht, mit neuen Ideen mit unseren Fans in Kontakt zu bleiben und wir haben wirklich ein sehr tolles Feedback dort bekommen! Ich denke, die Bands sollten wirklich verschiedene Social Media Plattformen ausprobieren, denn Fans gibt es überall. Versucht es!
Was sind eure nächsten Schritte? Single-Veröffentlichungen oder ein Album? Wo siehst du euch in 5 Jahren?
Alex: Wir werden Singles veröffentlichen, aber unser Hauptziel ist es ein Label zu zeichnen. Möglicherweise haben wir in 5 Jahren ein Album veröffentlicht und touren in ganz Europa!
Könnt ihr euch an eine lustige Situation auf der Bühne oder im Studio erinnern?
Alex: Wir haben eigentlich immer Spaß, wenn wir zusammen sind, haha! Einen unserer lustigsten Momente hatten wir als wir eine unserer bisher größten Shows in Nosturi, Helsinki, spielten. Etwa 20 Minuten vor der Show bemerkte unser Drummer Luke, dass er seine Pedale zuhause vergessen hatte! Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war das natürlich alles andere als lustig, aber glücklicherweise konnten wir die Pedale von einer anderen Band ausleihen und die Show war gerettet! Alles lief großartig!
Habt ihr außer der Musik noch andere Interessen/Hobbies?
Alex: Ich liebe Sport und spiele Tennis, wann immer ich Zeit habe. Luke schraubt gerne an Autos und JS macht sehr viele Livestreams auf Twitch. Mike spielt gerne Videospiele, also jeder ist beschäftigt in seiner Freizeit.
Gibt es noch weitere Neuigkeiten, die ihr uns mitteilen möchtet?
Alex: Wir werden dieses Jahr noch neue Songs veröffentlichen, also bleibt in Verbindung mit den Rock-Criminals und hört unsere Musik.
