First of all tell us something about how you got in touch with music, your musical history and how you founded NIVA. Who are the current band members?
Got in touch with music when I had my first vinyl album that my father gave me. It was a double live LP with Tom Jones. My father also signed it with my name so everyone could see that it was mine. The history started off with me taking over the mic in the Swedish local metal band called Zanity. We toured a short period of time in Sweden. After the Zanity period I started as a lead singer in the band Axia. When we were planning a new album with me on the vocals, we also decided to change the name to NIVA which then resulted in an album release that came out 1994. Current members are Peter Lundin on guitar, Magnus Ling on drums, Mikael Johansson on bass, Morgan Kjörk on guitar and me of course on vocals.
Your first album „No Capitulation“ came out 1994 and the second „Relievin‘ Rain“ followed 1996. The next one you released in 2011 – Gold from the future. What happened during this long time between the second and third one?
Relievin´Rain was planned to be released in 1996 as a follower to No Capitulation but didn’t make it to the release before the band split. I was planning to start educating myself and today my work occupation is within the IT sector as an application technician. I graduated in 2000 and was then pretty much occupied with work and the millennium problem that was in focus in many IT companies. It wasn’t until a friend Roger Ljunggren asked me about doing another NIVA album that I got interested. That was approximately around 2010. We then released Gold From The Future, Magnitude and Incremental IV.
The next ones were released in 2013 (Magnitude), 2414 (Incremental IV), 2016 Atmospherical. You’ve released three singles so far in 2018/2019. So I think it would be time for a new album. Are you already working on it?
The plan is to have a few more singles out and then perhaps release a full-length album. You really planted this idea of an album 🙂 Would be awesome to be able to offer both CD and LP.
Is songwriting teamwork in your band and how does it work?
I think it’ll be getting there in time. As it is right now we’ve just started to rehearsal NIVA songs and also cover songs with the cover band Machine. The goal is also to have some live gigs in the future with primarily NIVA and then also with Machine. About the songwriting, at this point, it’s mostly me composing the main accords on my guitar at home with vocal lines and lyrics. Then I present the song to my producer and we then try to get every part in the song together. The producer records the main parts and sends files to the guy that plays bass and to the keyboard player. Then I receive the finished music backgrounds and I lay down my vocals on it. Example of this is “Stay With Me” and “Time To Say Goodbye”. Then there is the usual mix and master of course. With “Rise Up Again”, Kent Johansson came up with the idea for the music backgrounds so I only composed the vocal melodies and lyrics this time. A dream situation is of course to have NIVA moving into a studio for a month or so. Creating new songs with the band. Unfortunately the music industry is not what it has been. I’m financing everything by myself as for now. Now that we’re a band the future may have something more to offer.
Your new single „Rise Up Again“ has an official release on 27th of march. You already gave the permission to play the song on radio stations. That’s a good idea to promote the single I have to say. Are you going to make a video too for promo?
The video is under making and will be ready in time for the promotion package that I’ll be sending out this week to radio stations.
You wrote the song in the ongoing pandemic and the lyrics are about the current situation. How much did it affect you also in the recording process?
The song idea came from a friend to the producer. I had the music background (demo) delivered to me by Kent Johansson. I came up with the vocal melodies and lyrics which were inspired by the pandemic situation we’re living in. There are many of us that have suffered a great deal and with that in mind I entered the studio to record the vocals. My thoughts were about contributing with strength to all of those in need and also to give strength to the important job that is done by workers in healthcare. That we all somehow will rise up again. When everything was ready for the mix we sent audio tracks to the producer Lars Chriss and let him make the magic touch before going to mastering handled by Mike Lind.
What do you prefer most, writing songs and studio work or performing live?
I guess I’ll need them both. During a period of 2011 to 2019, I didn’t have any band that could take on the live stage. It was all about different kinds of projects with different people involved in the studio sessions. Now we have a band that is able to rehearse and now also enter the live stages. Earlier I was focusing on studio sessions but today I’m interested in moving on to perform live with the band. NIVA had their first gig with this new band constellation on 5th of January 2020 in Trollhättan, Sweden just before the pandemic struck.
I think you already played many shows during your long career. Can you remember some funny situations on stage?
We once played in a tent in the center of a small town. Lots of people who had arrived in the central parts of the city where the live show was about to take place. During our gig, we suddenly saw a man looking in through the canvas wearing only a nightgown and nightcap. He shouted and gestured at our guy who was handling the mixer and wanted us to turn down the volume. 🙂
Do you have other interests/hobbies beside the music?
My interests lie in long-distance running and motorsports in general but primarily Formula 1.

Interview mit Tony Niva von NIVA
Erzähl uns zuerst wann du angefangen hast dich für Musik zu interessieren und wie es letztendlich zur Gründung von NIVA kam. Wer sind die derzeitigen Bandmitglieder?
Ich begann mich für Musik zu interessieren nachdem mein Vater mir die erste Vinyl gekauft hatte. Es war die Doppel-Live LP von Tom Jones. Mein Vater signierte sie mit meinem Namen. So sah jeder, dass sie mir gehörte. Die Geschichte fing damit an, dass ich das Mikro in der schwedischen Band Zanity übernahm. Wir tourten eine kurze Zeit in Schweden. Danach begann ich als Leadsinger in der Band Axia. Als wir dann ein neues Album mit mir an den Vocals geplant haben, beschlossen wir auch den Namen der Band in NIVA zu ändern. Das erste Album erschien dann 1994. Derzeit sind Peter Lundin an der Gitarre, Magnus Ling am Schlagzeug, Mikael Johansson am Bass, Morgan Kjörk an der Gitarre und natürlich ich an den Vocals.

Heute arbeite ich in der IT Branche als Application Techniker. 2000 schloss ich meine Ausbildung ab und war bekanntermaßen sehr beschäftigt mit dem Millenium Problem, das in vielen IT Unternehmen im Focus stand. Doch dann fragte mich mein Freund Roger Ljunggren nach einem weiteren NIVA Album und das brachte mich wieder zurück zur Musik. Das war in 2010. Danach wurden Gold From The Future, Magnitude und Incremental IV veröffentlicht.
Eure nächsten Alben wurden in 2013 (Magnitude), 2014 (Incremental IV), 2016 (Atmospherical) veröffentlicht. Ihr habt dann drei Singles in 2018/2019 veröffentlicht. Ich glaube es ist Zeit für ein neues Album. Arbeitet ihr vielleicht schon daran?
Der Plan ist noch einige Singles zu veröffentlichen und dann vielleicht ein richtiges Album. Du hast mich wirklich mit deiner Frage auf die Idee mit dem Album gebracht ???? Es wäre großartig, dieses auf CD und Vinyl anbieten zu können.
Ist das Songschreiben Teamwork in eurer Band und wie macht ihr das?
Ich glaube, es wird bald wieder soweit sein. Jetzt gerade haben wir begonnen, die NIVA Songs zu proben genauso wie Cover Songs mit der Coverband Machine. Das Ziel ist nämlich einige Live Shows vorwiegend mit NIVA und auch mal Machine in der Zukunft zu spielen. Zum Songwriting, zur Zeit schreibe ich vorwiegend die Hauptakkorde auf meiner Gitarre sowie die Vocal lines und Texte zuhause. Dann präsentiere ich den Song unserem Produzenten und wir arbeiten gemeinsam am Finish des Songs. Der Produzent nimmt die Songs auf und schickt die Dateien zum Bassplayer und Keyboarder. Danach become ich die kompletten Backgrounds und singe meinen Part dazu ein. Ein Beispiel dafür sind “Stay With Me” und “Time To Say Goodbye”. Dann folgt das Mixen und Mastern. Kent Johansson hatte die Idee für den Musikbackground für “Rise Up Again”, so komponierte ich nur den Gesang und die Lyriks in diesem Fall. Ein Traum wäre es natürlich mit NIVA einen Monat ins Studio gehen zu können, um neue Songs zu erarbeiten. Leider ist die Musikindustrie nicht mehr das was sie mal war. Ich finanziere alles aus eigener Tasche. Vielleicht hat die Zukunft wieder mehr zu bieten für unsere Band.
Eure neue Single “Rise Up Again” wird am 27. März veröffentlicht. Der Song läuft schon auf einigen Radiosendern vorab. Ich denke, das ist eine gute Idee um den Song zu promoten. Werdet ihr auch ein Video zum Song präsentieren?
Das Video ist jetzt fertig und am 25.03. veröffentlicht worden. Das Werbepaket geht gerade raus an die Radiosender.
Du hast den Song unter dem Eindruck der Pandemie geschrieben und die Lyriks handeln davon. Wie sehr hat euch das beim Aufnehmen des Songs beeinflusst?
Die Songidee hatte ein Freund meines Produzenten. Ich bekam den Musik Background (Demo) von Kent Johannson und schrieb den Gesang und die Lyriks dazu unter dem Einfluss der Pandemie, in der wir gerade leben. Es gibt viele, die darunter zu leiden haben und unter diesem Eindruck bin ich ins Studio gegangen um den Gesang aufzunehmen. Meine Gedanken waren, denen die es nötig haben Kraft zu geben und auch allen, die im so wichtigen Gesundheitswesen arbeiten. Dass wir alle wieder hochkommen. Als alles fertig war für den Mix, haben wir den Audiotrack für den letzten Feinschliff zum Produzenten Lars Chriss gesandt und danach zum Mastern zu Mike Lind.
Was bevorzugst du am meisten, Songschreiben und Studioarbeit oder Live-Auftritte?
Ich glaube ich brauche beides. Während der Zeit 2011 bis 2019 hatte ich keine Band für Live-Auftritte. Ich hatte verschiedene Projekte mit verschiedenen Musikern in Studio-Sessions. Jetzt haben wir eine Band und können wieder proben und die Bühnen für Live-Shows betreten. Früher habe ich mich auf die Studioarbeit konzentriert, aber jetzt möchte ich gerne wieder Live spielen. NIVA hatte den ersten Gig mit der jetzigen Besetzung am fünften Januar 2020 in Trollhättan (Schweden) kurz bevor die Pandemie ausbrach.
Ich glaube, du hast schon viele Konzerte in deiner langen Karriere gespielt. Kannst du dich an lustige Momente auf der Bühne erinnern?
Wir spielten mal ein Konzert in einem Zelt mitten in einer kleinen Stadt. Viele Leute waren vor Ort und in der Stadt unterwegs. Während unseres Auftritts sahen wir plötzlich einen Mann nur mit Nachthemd und -mütze bekleidet durch die Zeltplane schauen. Er schrie und gestikulierte zu unserem Mann am Mischpult er solle den Ton leiser stellen. Haha!!
Hast du andere Interessen/Hobbies neben der Musik?
Ich interessiere mich für Langstreckenlauf und Motorsport im Allgemeinen, besonders Formel 1.
