Let us start with your band. Please introduce yourself and the other band members and tell us something about your band history.
Jaakko: Hello! I come from Kotka, located in the southeast shore of Finland, pretty near to Russian border. I do the vocals (well most of it) in our band which started its journey somewhere around 2013. We started off as a therapy project. Nothing serious, just hanging around and playing some tunes. Somewhere along the way we figured out that maybe this could be something more. To this day we have made three full length albums and now this is more than just a therapy group. Nevertheless we try to keep the fun in it and not get too carried away with all the seriousness.
When did you decide to become a musician and which artists have been or still are your main influences?
Jaakko: To this day I don’t consider myself as a musician. A musician makes his pay by doing music and I still have my day job. So I am just a guy who has music as a hobby. I started off when a good friend of mine asked me to try out vocals in his band. I think the year was 1999 or 2000… I had no experience and I was pretty awful but the band did not give up on me and I got better pretty quick. Still trying to be a little bit better every year.
My influences are many but to name a few, I really like Geoff Tate and Taneli Jarva. They both have a lot of talent but it comes out in a very different way.
Your third album Fata Morgana got released on 19th of march. How are the reactions from fans on it so far?
Jaakko: It has been very heartwarming to see how well this album has been received. It is very important to us at this point because this was our first release on a bigger label.
Your three albums are a triology as you mentioned in another interview. So tell us the story behind it. What inspires you to the lyrics and are you all working together in the songwriting process?
Jaakko: On our debut Horror Vacui the narrator starts to distract himself from the world. He feels hollow and alone although he has everything. On Ruins comes the inevitable mental breakdown and on Fata Morgana he tries to pick of the pieces of his destroyed past. He takes a long journey towards the edges of the world to ponder why everything happened the way it did. Along the way he figures out that he has been living in a lie. His vision and thinking has been distorted by the “cold” of the world and that is why the record is titled as it is.
We all work very closely when making songs. Usually the guitar guys (Nico M. and Harri) or our bass player Niko start off by making a riff or a sketch of a song. Then we start to work it together at our rehearsal studio. We build it up and tear it down many times before we are done with help from our producer Teemu Aalto.
The inspiration for lyrics come from the theme of the album and the theme of the album comes from something that we are experiencing. So it is always rooted in everyday life in some way. Politics, relationships, books, movies, music… Everything contributes to it. It is hard to separate and analyze where the inspiration originally comes from.
I was able to ask Teemu Aalto, their producer, a few questions about the album production.
Hi Teemu, you have your own music production studio. Are you working with bands from different music genres? How long are you in this business now?
Teemu: I have pretty usual story how I got in to the business. In the 90’s as teenager I started playing in several lineups/bands and usually I was the one who engineered all the demos we made. We mainly used cassette 4-tracker and one microphone as gear. That was pretty decent ”school” for me how to capture sound! In the end of that decade I entered first time in a real recording studio and that was it! I knew what I was going to do for living! After many years of being freelancer I finally started running my own business as an entrepreneur in 2011. Ten years from now.
Yes, I do many different genres and that’s a bliss! Most of the bands that I produce are rock/metal genre but I like to do other genres as well. Lately I’ve had some sessions with choir and classical music which I find very interesting and inspirational! I even do ebooks some times. So lots of different kind of stuff!! Rap/R&B genres are what I’m not so familiar but people from those genres have been contacting me lately. But I’m still waiting for the right session to grab on.
I really hate being considered only as metal producer which I’m really not! I like all kinds of good music and after all it doesn’t matter what genre you represent if you only had material with good quality. Also I’m not afraid to mix up different kind of genres. I think that’s the only way to invent something new. All genre purism is boring.
You recorded and mixed the new album Fata Morgana together with Marianas Rest. Is that your first collaboration with them and how was it to work with the guys? Were there any funny moments during the recording you want to share with us?
Teemu: Funniest thing is I can’t recall any funny moments from the session, HAHA!! Just kidding.
I love working with MR guys. The guys themselves as persons are already funny so there’s always certain kind of humor in the air! We appreciate each other quite a lot and after working with them with three studio albums we’ve grown together and everyone in the team have learned from their mistakes on earlier sessions. So this time we knew exactly what we wanted to do. And I knew that there were not any shortcuts for achieving the best results. No ”fix-it-in-the-mix” mentality. So I guess that’s why we succeeded with Fata Morgana so well! And now we have found the right path considering the future releases. And of course I hope our co-operation will continue from now on!
Your album is out now and you can’t play liveshows because of the pandemic. Do you plan perhaps a livestream or is that something you’re not in?
Jaako: Actually we have done something that is not a direct stream show but close to it. We filmed a live performance a few weeks back and Napalm streams it in two parts on their Youtube account. The first part already came out and the second part is coming out in the weeks to follow. It is a real live take. Nothing fixed and nothing added. Mistakes and all, it is all there.
How can fans support you right now? Where can they buy the new album and merch?
Jaako: Well we are hoping to get our own webshop open and pretty soon we will. We are going to have some unique stuff there. Limited edition autographed golden vinyls and a variety of shirts for example. Napalm Records webshop (https://smarturl.it/MR-FataMorgana) is a great place to support as well. If you enjoyed Fata Morgana you should probably get your own copy of marble vinyl there. You cannot buy it anywhere else.
Hopefully open air concerts and Festivals like The Dark River Festival can take place. Do you already have any other concert plans for this year?
Jaakko: We have one show with Kaunis Kuolematon. It is actually their record release show which has gotten postponed many times. They released it November 2020. If we got to do the show, the record release gig will take place about a year after the original release. Pretty weird thing but during the past year it has become clear that this world is a pretty weird place.
Looking back to your last concerts, were there any funny moments on stage?
Jaako: Loads of Spinal Tap moments. I remember a show in Krakow where we played in front of an entrance in a very small bar. The bar had just a few cables and a mixing table so fucked up it fell apart just by looking at it. When we started our gig the mixing guy gave up and started to do his friends hair over the bar counter. It was funny as hell.
Besides the music, do you have other interests/hobbies?
Jaakko: I like to play video and board games and do sports when I have the energy. Football and ice hockey are a lot of fun especially with my kids.

Interview mit Jaakko Mäntymaa von Marianas Rest und Teemu Aalto (Produzent)
Lass uns mit deiner Band anfangen. Stell deine Band vor und erzähle uns etwas über die Bandgeschichte.
Jaakko: Hallo, ich komme aus Kotka, einer kleinen Stadt an der Südostküste Finnland’s, in der Nähe zur russischen Grenze. Ich bin der Sänger in unserer Band, die wir in 2013 gründeten. Wir haben unsere Band anfangs als eine Art Therapie gesehen. Nichts Ernstes, einfach nur sich treffen, abhängen und einige Tunes spielen. Irgendwann fanden wir heraus, dass daraus mehr werden könnte. Und ja nun haben wir das dritte Album veröffentlicht und es ist so viel mehr als eine Therapiegruppe daraus geworden. Haha! Nichtsdestotrotz versuchen wir den Spaß daran zu erhalten und nicht zu sehr einen ernsten Job daraus zu machen.
Wann hast du dich entschlossen Musiker zu werden und welche Künstler haben dich hauptsächlich beeinflusst bzw. tun es immer noch?
Jaakko: Ich bezeichne mich bis heute nicht als Musiker. Ein Musiker verdient sein Geld mit der Musik und ich arbeite immer noch in meinem Hauptjob. Ich bin nur ein Kerl, der Musik als Hobby hat. Ich fing damit an, als ein guter Freund mich fragte, ob ich nicht mal versuchen möchte in seiner Band zu singen. Ich glaube das war 1999 oder 2000… Ich hatte keine Erfahrung und es klang schrecklich, aber die Band gab mich nicht auf und ich wurde schnell besser darin. Ich versuche immer noch meinen Gesang zu verbessern.
Mich beeinflussen viele Künstler und ich nenne hier nur ein paar wenige. Ich mag Geoff Tate und Taneli Jarva. Beide haben sehr viel Talent in sehr verschiedener Art und Weise.
Euer drittes Album Fata Morgana wurde am 19.03.21 veröffentlicht. Wie sind die Reaktionen der Fans darauf bis jetzt?
Jaakko: Die Reaktionen auf das Album sind überwältigend. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt ist das auch sehr wichtig für uns, weil es die erste Veröffentlichung mit einem großen Label ist.
Ihr bezeichnet eure drei Alben als Triologie in einem anderen Interview. Erzähl uns mehr darüber. Woher bekommst du die Inspiration für die Songtexte? Arbeitet ihr alle zusammen an den Songs?
Jaakko: Auf unserem Debutalbum Horror Vakui beginnt der Erzähler sich von seiner Umwelt zu entfernen. Er fühlt sich leer und einsam, obwohl es ihm an nichts mangelt. Auf Ruins (zweites Album) kommt es zum unvermeidlichen mentalen Zusammenbruch und in Fata Morgana versucht er die Teile seiner zerstörten Vergangenheit zu finden. Er unternimmt eine lange Reise bis ans Ende der Welt, um darüber nachzudenken warum das alles geschah. Auf seinem Weg erkennt er, dass sein Leben eine einzige Lüge war. Seine Visionen und Gedanken wurden durch die Kälte der Welt zerstört. Deshalb haben wir das Album Fata Morgana benannt.
Wir arbeiten sehr eng beim Songwriting zusammen. Normalerweise beginnen die Gitarristen (Nico M. und Harri) oder unser Bassist Niko mit einem Riff oder Entwurf eines Songs. Dann arbeiten wir zusammen in unserem Übungsstudio daran. Wir starten und verwerfen es viele Male, bevor wir mit Hilfe unseres Produzenten Teemu Aalto damit zufrieden sind.
Die Inspirationen für die Texte kommen vom Album Thema und dieses wird durch unsere Erfahrungen inspiriert. Es ist immer aus dem täglichen Leben gegriffen. Politik, Partnerschaften, Bücher, Filme, Musik …. Alles spielt hinein. Es ist schwer das zu trennen und zu analysieren, woher die ursprüngliche Inspiration kam.
Nachdem ich ihren Producer Teemu Aalto (Teemu Aalto music productions) kenne, habe ich ihm auch ein paar Fragen gestellt.
Hallo Teemu, du hast ein eigenes Musikstudio. Arbeitest du mit Bands aus verschiedenen Musikrichtungen zusammen? Wie lange bist du schon in diesem Geschäft?
Teemu: Es war eine ganz gewöhnliche Geschichte, wie ich in dieses Business gekommen bin. In den 90igern als Teenager habe ich begonnen in einigen Bands zu spielen und für gewöhnlich war ich derjenige, der die Demos hergestellt hat. Wir benutzten zumeist gebrauchte Kassettenrecorder und ein Mikrophon. Das war eine gute Schule für mich, um zu lernen, wie der Sound aufgenommen werden sollte! Nach ca. 10 Jahren war ich das erste Mal in einem richtigen Studio und das war es! Ich wusste sofort mit was ich mein Leben finanzieren wollte! Nach vielen Jahren als freier Mitarbeiter habe ich mein eigenes Tonstudio in 2011 gestartet. 10 Jahre ist das nun schon her.
Ja, ich arbeite in vielen verschiedenen Musikrichtungen und das ist ein Glück! Die meisten Bands sind im Rock/Metal Genre aber ich mag genauso andere Musikrichtungen. Zuletzt hatte ich einige Sessions mit Chor und klassischer Musik, was ich sehr interessant und inspirierend finde! Manchmal produziere ich auch ebooks. Viele verschiedene Sachen! Rap und R&B sind nicht ganz so meine Richtung, aber es haben mich einige Leute aus diesem Bereich in letzter Zeit kontaktiert. Ich warte noch auf die richtige Session, um zuzugreifen.
Ich mag es nicht als Metal Produzent betrachtet zu werden, das bin ich wirklich nicht! Ich mag jede gute Musik und es ist nicht wichtig welche Musikrichtung du präsentierst, was zählt ist die Qualität des Materials. Ich schrecke auch nicht davor zurück, verschiedene Genres zu mischen. Das ist der einzige Weg etwas völlig Neues zu erfinden. Alles Reine ist langweilig.
Du hast das neue Album Fata Morgana zusammen mit Marianas Rest aufgenommen und produziert. Ist das eure erste Zusammenarbeit gewesen und wie war es mit den Jungs zusammenzuarbeiten? Gab es lustige Momente während der Aufnahmen, die du uns erzählen möchtest?
Teemu: Das Lustigste daran ist, dass ich mich an keine erinnern kann, haha!! Nein, ich scherze!
Ich liebe es mit Marianas Rest zusammenzuarbeiten. Die Jungs persönlich sind sehr lustig und daher liegt immer Humor in der Luft! Wir respektieren uns sehr und nach der Arbeit an allen drei Alben sind wir zusammengewachsen und jeder im Team hat aus den Fehlern der Vergangenheit gelernt. Deshalb wussten wir dieses Mal genau was wir tun wollten. Und ich wusste es würde keine Probleme geben, das beste Ergebnis zu erreichen. Keine „Fix-it-in-the-mix“ Mentalität. Und das so glaube ich haben wir mit Fata Morgana erfolgreich hinbekommen. Damit haben wir den richtigen Weg für kommende Veröffentlichungen gefunden. Und natürlich hoffe ich, dass unsere Zusammenarbeit weitere Früchte trägt.
Euer Album ist jetzt veröffentlicht und ihr könnt keine Liveshows spielen aufgrund der Pandemie. Habt ihr vielleicht einen Livestream geplant oder ist das etwas was ihr nicht tun wollt?
Jaako: Wir haben bereits etwas getan. Es ist nicht direkt ein Livestream aber kommt diesem doch sehr nah. Wir haben vor ein paar Wochen eine Liveshow gefilmt und unser Label Napalm veröffentlicht es in zwei Teilen auf deren YouTube Account. Der erste Teil ist bereits raus und ihr könnt ihn hier ansehen:
Der zweite Teil wird am Samstag, 10.04.21, 21:00 Uhr, veröffentlicht. Es ist eine richtige Liveshow. Nichts bearbeitet oder hinzugefügt. Fehler usw. alles ist zu sehen!
Wie können die Fans euch jetzt unterstützen? Wo kann man das neue Album und Merch kaufen?
Jaako: Wir hoffen, dass wir unseren Webshop bald öffnen können. Es wird bald so weit sein. Wir werden einige einzigartige Artikel anbieten, eine limitierte signierte goldene Vinyl Edition und einige Shirts. Der Napalm Records Webshop ist ebenso ein guter Platz um uns zu supporten. Open-Air Konzerte und Festivals wie das Dark River Festival werden hoffentlich im Sommer stattfinden können. Habt ihr sonst noch Konzerte für dieses Jahr geplant?
Jaakko: Wir haben eine Show mit Kaunis Kuolematon. Es ist ihre Album Release Show, die bereits mehrere Male verschoben wurde. Ihr Album wurde im November 2020 veröffentlicht. Wenn es klappt, wird diese Show wahrscheinlich ein Jahr nach der offiziellen Albumveröffentlichung stattfinden. Total verrückt, aber während des letzten Jahres wurde es immer klarer, dass diese Welt seltsam geworden ist.
Zurückschauend auf eure letzten Konzerte, gab es lustige Momente auf der Bühne?
Jaakko: Eine Menge verrückter Momente. Ich erinnere mich an eine Show in Krakow, wo wir in einer sehr kleinen Bar gegenüber dem Eingang spielten. In der Bar gab es ein paar Stromkabel und ein Mischpult, so altertümlich, dass man das Gefühl hatte es würde auseinanderbrechen, wenn man es nur anschaut. Als wir anfingen zu spielen, gab der Kerl am Mischpult auf und begann die Haare von seinem Freund über der Bartheke zu stylen. Es war höllisch lustig!
Hast du noch andere Hobbies/Interessen neben der Musik?
Jaako: Ich spiele gerne Video- und Brettspiele und mache Sport, wenn ich die Energie dafür habe. Fußball und Eishockey zusammen mit meinen Kindern machen viel Spaß.
