Tell us something about your musical roots. When did you get in touch with music and decided to become a musician?
Well, my musical ’awakening’ was at the age of six, when heard Elvis Presley singin’ Tutti Frutti. My heart was sold. Although it took many years for me to get into really playin’ rock’n roll, I listened a lot to all kinds of old school stuff. Really from delta blues to Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc… I had to play all kinds of instruments in my childhood, I have to say that I wasn’t really fond of playing the flute or the piano…I wanted to play the drums and the electric guitar. I got my first real electric guitar probably at the age of 15 or something…it didn’t really kick off by then, so I started playing the drums. When I was 17 or 18 I was singing’ in a band and our guitarist left the band, so someone had to start playing it and that’s probably when I realized that I can do this and I love it! I left music to the background in my life for many years, it was partly because of the conservatoire I went to…it was a fucking nightmare to me. But that’s not the only reason. Later on I started writing and playing again and here I am!
Which musicians influenced you the most? Is there someone you would love to collaborate with for a song?
Honestly I can not name only one musician who has influenced me….there’s a legion of those great men and women that I adore! Although, as a vocalist I’d like to get on stage with my long time heroes David Coverdale and Ian Gillan. A songwriting session with Mr. Jimmy Page would be mind blowing.
When did you found Gentle Savage? Is the current lineup the same like in the beginning and how did you meet up?
Our first line up was formed by Tornado and a drummer who’s not in the band anymore. Vance found the band via a musicians forum. In the beginning we were only a group of guys who wanted to jam, write music and have fun. Pretty soon in showed out that the songs we wrote, sounded quite classy. So we needed to raise the stakes by looking for players to form a more professional group. It took several years to find the right guys for the right jobs and this line up we have now, has been together since 2019. It feels good and we know that we have the right chemistry and the right attitude for what it takes to make a Rock band sparkle.
Whats the meaning of your bandname and who came up with the idea for it?
The name Gentle Savage represents the personality traits that we have as individuals and as a group. You can find these same streaks in every member of the band; one is more gentle whilst another is more savage. All living creatures have the same built-in setup; something raw, something softer. Even the most cruel predator protects their own when danger strikes. Be nice and I’ll be gentle, attack me and I’ll show you who’s boss. This idea was found by me, Tornado.
Your names as bandmembers are very interesting, Tornado Bearstone, Vance Bead, Jay B., Tim O’Shore, Theo van Boom. How did you all come up with your names?
Haha, thank’s! There are some stories behind the artist names…my (Tornado) name came partly from my wife and partly from the boys…you see..well…it seems that sometimes people have problems with staying up with me and my passionate ways of working and doing things. So one Sunday morning I was drinking coffee and planning what to do by writing a ’to-do’ list. My wife was having her day off from work and suddenly she just said:’ your one damn hurricane, I get stressed out only by looking at you on a Sunday morning planning all those thousands of things you need to do’. And then luckily, she laughed. So i told this to the boys and they reacted …hmmm…well, they had this certain look on their faces, like they seemed to understand what my wife was saying. Someone just stated:’Yeah, your a fxxxxxg tornado’. And we live at Bearstone Ranch, so that was it.
The other names are more or less a sort of a mixture of translated or shortened and translated names completed with imaginary aspects or sides of the personality.
Vance always wanted to be Bead, you know, shine and be expensive…haha;)
Theo is rooted partly to Holland and van Boom means a tree in the Dutch language.
Jay B….well, it was first a kind of a name that can not be published, so Jay shortened it and made it printable by dropping certain parts off!
Tim O’Shore is twisted from his real name. His Finnish last name points at the English word ’shore’ and he is sometimes a bit of a bad ass when it comes to making decisions… So we gave him a little Irish roots by twisting Shore into O’Shore. It sounds better.
Is songwriting teamwork in your band or how does it work?
I am the leader and the songwriter but all members bring ideas when it comes to arrangements. Our working spirit comes naturally by focusing on the music and by putting our egos aside while we are at work. We also talk if there’s a problem at hand and we try to encourage each other to stretch their limits.
Right now you announced the release of a new single „Lovin‘ ain’t easy“ on 16th of april. Can you already tell us something about the new song? Will there be a video too?
The atmosphere, melodies and harmonies of ‘Lovin’ Ain’t Easy’ borrow musically from the 70’s era. This tune is closest to the feel of Gentle Savage when the band first started writing music and it is planned to be a stand-alone single, not included to the upcoming ‘Midnight Waylay’ debut album.” I wrote it simply because of the message: ’Sometimes Lovin’ Ain’t Easy’. It doesn’t say that loving is always hard or that one can not succeed in love. It’s a story of a state of mind when you get left alone without really understanding why.
We will release a lyric video and maybe later on a official video. There’s still so much to do for the upcoming full length album release, so we need to save our resources for that.
What can we expect from your new album „Midnight Waylay“ which will be released later this year? Will it be also available as a physical one?
Midnight Waylay will be a concept album, but the songs work well also as singles. We hope that we can build a story line that takes the listener to a journey to the abyss and back to life. So it will include something sweet and something very heavy.
We will release the full Midnight Waylay first on Bandcamp and later on all the major streaming services. There will also be physical copies available in form of cd’s and vinyl’s. The cover art is awesome! I worked it up from my ideas with my graphic artist friend Vin Valentino. Can’t wait to hear what you think about it!
Do you have any other interests besides music?
Oh…lots of them. I love motorbikes, I like hiking, meditation, sauna&swimming, Pilates, gym, movies, I read A LOT of books. I think I like almost everything except house cleaning.

Interview mit Tornado Bearstone von Gentle Savage
Erzähle uns etwas über deine musikalischen Wurzeln. Wann bist du mit Musik in Berührung gekommen und hast dich entschlossen, Musiker zu werden?
Nun ich war 6 Jahre alt, als ich Elvis Presley Tutti Frutti singen hörte. Da war es um mich geschehen. Obwohl es noch viele Jahre dauern sollte bis ich wirklich Rock’n Roll spielen konnte, habe ich oft diese alten Klassiker gehört. Alles von Delta Blues bis Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc. Ich musste einige Musikinstrumente spielen lernen in meiner Kindheit. Ich hatte nicht wirklich Lust darauf Flöte oder Klavier zu üben. Ich wollte lieber Schlagzeug oder E-Gitarre spielen. Als ich ungefähr 15 war, habe ich meine erste E-Gitarre bekommen. Es hat mich nicht wirklich gepackt, also begann ich Schlagzeug zu spielen. Mit 17 oder 18 sang ich in einer Band und als der Gitarrist die Band verließ, musste jemand diesen Part übernehmen und das war der Augenblick, in dem ich realisierte, dass ich es tun könnte und so geschah es! Einige Jahre habe ich die Musik in den Hintergrund gestellt, weil ich auf ein Konservatorium ging. Es war ein Alptraum für mich. Aber ich fand zurück zur Musik und so bin ich jetzt der Bandleader in Gentle Savage.
Welche Musiker haben dich am meisten beeinflusst? Mit wem würdest du gerne für einen Song zusammenarbeiten?
Wahrlich, ich kann nicht nur einen Musiker nennen, der mich beeinflusst hat… es ist eine Legion der großen Männer und Frauen, die ich verehre! Obwohl ich Sänger bin, würde ich gerne mit meinen Allzeitidolen David Coverdale und Ian Gillian auf der Bühne stehen. Einen Song würde ich liebend gerne mit Jimmy Page zusammen schreiben.
Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt und wann wurde die Band gegründet? Gab es Veränderungen im Line-Up während der Zeit?
Unser erstes Line-Up war meine Wenigkeit, Tornado und ein Schlagzeuger, der nicht mehr in der Band ist. Vance fand uns über ein Musikerforum. Am Anfang waren wir nur ein paar Kerle, die jammen, Musik schreiben und Spaß haben wollten. Aber wir merkten recht schnell, dass die Songs, die wir schrieben, gut klangen. So beschlossen wir uns nach weiteren Bandmitgliedern umzusehen, um eine professionelle Gruppe zu gründen. Es brauchte einige Jahre, um die passenden Kerle zu finden und unser jetziges Line-Up besteht nun seit 2019. Es fühlt sich gut an und wir wissen, wir haben die gleiche Chemie und Einstellung, die es braucht, um eine tolle Rock Band sein.
Welche Bedeutung hat euer Bandname und wer hatte die Idee?
Der Name Gentle Savage repräsentiert die Charaktereigenschaften, die wir als Individuen und als Band haben. Man kann diese beiden Seiten in jedem Bandmitglied finden; einer ist mehr sanft, während ein anderer mehr wild ist. Alle Lebewesen haben diese beiden Seiten; etwas Wildes, etwas Sanftes. Auch der grausamste Predator beschützt seine eigene Familie, wenn Gefahr besteht. Sei freundlich und ich werde sanft sein, greif mich an und ich werde dir zeigen wer der Boss ist. Die Idee dazu hatte ich.
Eure Namen in der Band sind sehr interessant, Tornado Bearstone, Vance Bead, Jay B., Tim O’Shore, Theo von Boom. Wie seid ihr darauf gekommen?
Haha, danke! Es gibt ein paar Geschichten dazu – Mein Name (Tornado) kam teilweise durch meine Frau und teilweise von den Jungs. Tja, es scheint, dass die Leute manchmal Probleme mit mir haben, zum Beispiel morgens und mit meiner Art zu arbeiten und Dinge zu tun. An einem Sonntagmorgen beim Kaffee habe ich meinen Tag mit einer To-do Liste geplant. Meine Frau hatte ihren freien Tag und plötzlich sagte sie: Du bist ein verdammter Hurrikan, es stresst mich schon dir nur beim Planen von tausend Dingen, die du tun willst, zuzusehen. Aber dann lachte sie glücklicherweise. Das erzählte ich den Jungs und was soll ich sagen – hmmm – sie hatten diesen bedeutungsvollen Ausdruck in ihren Gesichtern, als ob sie genau verstehen was meine Frau gesagt hatte. Einer meinte nur: Ja, du bist ein verfl… Tornado. Und da wir auf der Bearstone Ranch leben, war damit mein Name gefunden. Die anderen Namen sind mehr oder weniger ein Mix aus übersetzten oder gekürzten Namen ergänzt mit imaginären Aspekten oder persönlichen Charakterzügen.
Vance wollte immer eine Perle (Bead) sein, du weißt, schimmernd und teuer. Haha????
Theo hat teilweise Wurzeln in Holland und van Boom bedeutet Baum in der holländischen Sprache.
Jay B. – Tja, es war zuerst ein Name, der nicht veröffentlicht werden konnte, daher hat Jay ihn gekürzt und hoffähig gemacht!!
Tim O’Shore ist eine Mischung aus seinem richtigen Namen. Tim‘s finnischer Nachname heißt im Englischen „shore“ und er ist manchmal ein Schaf, wenn es darum geht, Entscheidungen zu treffen. So gaben wir ihm einen irischen Touch mit der Kombination O’Shore. Es hört sich besser an.
Schreibt ihr zusammen an den Songs?
Ich bin der Bandleader und Songschreiber, aber alle Mitglieder bringen ihre Ideen ein, wenn wir die Songs zusammen arrangieren. Unsere musikalische Inspiration kommt von selbst, wenn wir uns auf die Musik konzentrieren und unsere Egos beiseitelegen. Wir sprechen über alle Probleme und versuchen uns gegenseitig zu motivieren, um das Beste aus jedem einzelnen herauszuholen.
Ihr habt nun eure neue Single „Lovin‘ Ain’t Easy“ am 16.04.21 veröffentlicht. Um was geht es in diesem Song und gibt es ein Video dazu?
Die Atmosphäre, Melodie und Harmonie von Lovin‘ Ain’t Easy ist in den 70er Jahren angesiedelt. Dieser Song beschreibt den musikalischen Stil in den Anfängen unserer Band und es ist geplant, diesen Song als Single für sich stehen zu lassen, also nicht in das kommende Album „Midnight Waylay“ aufzunehmen. Ich habe diesen Song einfach aus folgendem Grund geschrieben: Lieben ist manchmal nicht einfach“. Es sagt nicht aus, dass Lieben immer schwierig ist oder jemand nicht erfolgreich Lieben kann. Es ist eine Geschichte über einen Gefühlszustand, wenn du verlassen worden bist und nicht wirklich weißt, warum es geschehen ist.
Wir haben soeben ein Lyrikvideo veröffentlicht und vielleicht wird es später noch ein offizielles Video geben. Es ist gerade sehr viel Arbeit für die kommende Albumveröffentlichung zu erledigen, darin liegt nun unsere Priorität.
Was können wir von dem neuen Album „Midnight Waylay“ erwarten? Wird es auch in physikalischer Form verfügbar sein?
Midnight Waylay wird ein Konzeptalbum sein, aber natürlich kann man die Songs auch einzeln geniessen. Wir wollen eine Geschichte erzählen, die den Zuhörer auf eine Reise in den Abgrund und zurück ins Leben mitnimmt. Also wird es etwas sehr Schönes aber auch Schweres beinhalten.
Wir werden das Album zuerst auf Bandcamp veröffentlichen und später auf den üblichen Streamingdiensten. Es wird auch auf CD und Vinyl erhältlich sein. Das Cover sieht großartig aus! Ich habe es zusammen mit unserem Graphikdesigner Vin Valentino erarbeitet. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt auf die Meinung unserer Fans dazu.
Hast du neben der Musik noch andere Interessen?
Oh ja, sehr viele. Ich liebe Motorräder, ich gehe gerne wandern, Meditation, Sauna & Schwimmen, Pilates, Gymnastik, Kinofilme. Ich lese sehr viele Bücher. Ich mag fast alles außer Hausarbeiten. ????
