Wie sieht eure musikalische Vergangenheit aus? Habt ihr vor Wisborg in anderen Bands gespielt? Wo habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
Nikolas: Wir waren beide natürlich vor WISBORG schon musikalisch unterwegs, in teilweise sehr verschiedenen Richtungen.
Konstantin hat damals Livemusiker gesucht, um eines seiner Soloprojekte auf die Bühne zu bringen. Ich selbst habe zu der Zeit noch Bass in einer Alternative Rock/Metal-Band gespielt, die irgendwie vor sich hinplätscherte, und da bin ich nebenbei als Bassist bei Konstantin eingestiegen. Wir haben dann relativ schnell gemerkt, dass wir auf vielen Ebenen auf einer Wellenlänge sind und haben beschlossen, alles stehen und liegen zu lassen, um einfach zu Zweit etwas ganz Neues zu starten und uns vollends darauf zu fokussieren.
Euer Bandname Wisborg erinnert mich an den Spielfilm Nosferatu von Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. In diesem bringt Graf Orlok (Nosferatu) Schrecken über die Stadt Wisborg. Gibt es da einen Zusammenhang?
Nikolas: Als die ersten Songs fertig waren und sich irgendwie eine stilistische Richtung abgezeichnet hatte, kam Konstantin mit der Idee, das Projekt mit dem Thema Stummfilm zu verknüpfen – textlich sowie audiovisuell. WISBORG hat sich dann als Bandname, eben in Anlehnung an Nosferatu, ziemlich schnell abgezeichnet.
Auch eure Songtexte wie z.B. Becoming Caligari (Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari) können mit dem Horrorgenre verbunden werden. Habt ihr ein Faible dafür? Was inspiriert euch noch zu euren Songtexten?
Konstantin: Weniger ein Faible für Horror als für expressionistisches Kino der Zwanzigerjahre. Was ich daran spannend finde ist vor allem die visuelle Komponente – Bildkompositionen, welche die Realität künstlerisch verzerren.
Inspiration kommt von überall her. Ich gehe mit einem kreativ offenen Mindset durchs Leben.
Habt ihr musikalische Vorbilder/Bands, die euch beeinflusst haben bzw. immer noch beeinflussen?
Nikolas: Die Einflüsse sind ziemlich breit gefächert, was man denke ich vor allem auf INTO THE VOID merkt. Stilistisch kommt es bei mir vor allem auf die Band oder den Musiker an, das Genre ist da fast zweitrangig. In meiner Playlist würden zum Beispiel Ministry auf Muse oder Deftones auf The Kills treffen. Einschläge verschiedener Bands sind dann instinktiv mal mehr und mal weniger zu hören.
Konstantin: Das geht mir ähnlich wie Nikolas. Es gibt viel zu viel gute Musik, um sich auf eine Richtung festzulegen, dementsprechend vielseitig ist das Spektrum an Bands und Sounds, die mich beeinflussen.
Wie läuft das Songwriting bei euch ab? Habt ihr dafür ein bestimmtes Schema oder ist es eher spontan? Wo entstehen Ideen für Melodien zuerst, in deinen Gedanken oder beim Musik spielen also an Keyboard/Gitarre?
Nikolas: Das ist tatsächlich ganz schön verschieden, wenn auch bei uns Demos grundsätzlich am Laptop oder Rechner entstehen. Entweder kommt einer von uns mit einzelnen Ideen, aus denen wir dann die Songstruktur herausarbeiten, oder einer (erfahrungsgemäß meistens Konstantin) hat schon den größten Teil des Songs fertig. Dann kommt es immer darauf an, wie lange es dauert an Parts zu arbeiten, bis beide zufrieden sind. Das ist das großartige an der Arbeit zu Zweit: es ist die direkteste Form der Demokratie. Wenn irgendwas nicht von uns beiden abgenickt wird, passiert es nicht.
Drei Alben in knapp vier Jahren zeigen eure enorme Kreativität auf. Die Albumcover zusammen ergeben ein Gesamtbild – eine Trilogie. Erzählt uns mehr dazu, vor allem welchen Abschluss das dritte Album bieten wird. Oder ist es ein Open End?
Nikolas: Die Trilogie ist mit INTO THE VOID vorerst abgeschlossen. Wir waren die letzten Jahre wirklich viel damit beschäftigt, Songs zu schreiben und auszuarbeiten und diese in Albumform zu bringen. Das passierte aber nicht aufgrund irgendeines Zeitplans oder so, wir hatten einfach Bock und keine Lust zu warten. Jetzt nach dem dritten Album wollen wir uns erst mal Zeit lassen ausgiebig live zu spielen und zu schauen, in welche Richtung sich WISBORG die nächsten Jahre über entwickelt.
Wie sehr hat die Pandemie eure Arbeit im Studio und vor allem bei der Produktion des Videos zur neuen Single „I Believe In Nothing“ beeinträchtigt?
Konstantin: Die Pandemie hat viele Abläufe verzögert. Wir mussten einiges aufschieben, um nicht gegen Kontaktauflagen zu verstoßen. Ich denke aber, dass die zusätzliche Zeit dem Album hier und da ganz gut getan hat.

Wie geht ihr mit dem Umstand um, dass ihr das neue Album „Into the Void“ (Release am 19.03.2021) wahrscheinlich erst im Herbst bzw. Winter euren Fans live präsentieren könnt? Oder habt ihr Livestreams geplant?
Nikolas: Natürlich würden wir die Songs am liebsten so früh wie möglich live umsetzen, aber die Situation lässt sich nicht ändern und da haben wir Verständnis für. Ich kann mir aber vorstellen, dass die ersten Konzerte, die wieder möglich sind, dafür umso befreiender und energetischer sein werden. Livestreams sind bisher noch nicht geplant.
Habt ihr noch andere Projekte außerhalb von Wisborg in Arbeit? Ich denke da in erster Linie an dein Soloprojekt Morgue Poetry? Ist da etwas geplant oder liegt es vorerst auf Eis?
Konstantin: Irgendwann wird sicher wieder etwas nebenher passieren, ich möchte diesbezüglich aber keine konkreten Versprechungen machen.
Was möchtet ihr den Fans noch mitteilen?
Nikolas: Passt auf euch auf und nehmt Rücksicht aufeinander in diesen wahnsinnigen Zeiten. Danke für die vielen warmen Worte nach dem Release unserer ersten Single und die ganze Unterstützung. Wir freuen uns wie ihr wahrscheinlich auch schon darauf, so bald wie möglich wieder mit Shows am Start zu sein.

Interview with Konstantin Michely and Nikolas Eckstein from Wisborg
Your musical past before you joined Wisborg. Did you play in other bands? How did you meet up?
Nikolas: We both played in other bands before Wisborg, also in different musicstyles.
Konstantin searched for livemusicians to bring one of his soloprojects on stage. I played the bass in an alternative rock/metal-band and joined the project as bassplayer. And soon we both notized, that we had the same interests and started this together and completely focused on Wisborg.
Your bandname Wisborg reminds me on the movie Nosferatu by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. In the movie Graf Orlok (Nosferatu) brings terror to the city Wisborg. Is there a connection to it?
Nikolas: The first songs were ready and they went into a special direction, Konstantin had the idea to associate our project with the theme silent movie – lyrically as well as audio-visual. And the bandname Wisborg based on Nosferatu quickly emerged.
Also your lyrics like Becoming Caligari (the cabinet of Dr. Caligari) connect to the horrorgenre. Du you have a faible for it? What else inspires you to your lyrics?
Konstantin: Less a faible for horror more for the expressionistic cinema of the twenties. What I find exciting about it is the visual component – pictures, which the reality artistically distort.
Inspiration comes from everywhere. I go through life with a creative open mindset.
Do you have idols/bands, which already had or still have influences on you?
Nikolas: Our influences have a whide spectrum and I think it will be noticed on INTO THE VOID. The music genre doesn’t matter so much, I pay attention to the style of a band or musician. On my playlist for example are Ministry together with Muse or Deftones with The Kills. Influences from various bands instinctively can be heard more or less.
Konstantin: It’s the same for me. There’s too much good music, to only look in one direction. So my spectrum on bands and sounds I get inspired is versatile.
How about the songwriting? Do you have a plan or is it something spontaneous? Where do the ideas for the songs come from first? In your mind or when you play keybords/guitar?
Nikolas: Thats in fact different, even the demos always are created on laptop or pc. Either one of us has some ideas and we both work on the song structures, or one (for the most it’s Konstantin) already did the main part of the song. It always depends on how long it takes to work on the parts until we both are satisfied with it. That’s the great thing about the work together: It‘s the most direct form of democracy. It won’t happen if we both don’t agree with it.
Three albums in almost four years show your awesome creativity. The album covers build a whole picture – a triology. Tell us more about it, what kind of ending offers the third album? Or is it an open end?
Nikolas: The triology ends with INTO THE VOID. We really worked much on writing songs and give them the final touch for the album releases. We didn’t have a time schedule, so we worked on like we wanted to do it. Now after releasing the third album we want to take time to play live shows as much as we can and to look forward in which direction Wisborg develops the next years.
How much did the pandemic affect your studio work and the production of the video „I Believe in Nothing“?
Konstantin: The pandemic delayed many processes. We had to postpone some things so as not to violate contact requirements. Nethertheless, this additional time on the album has done well.
What are your thoughts about your new album „Into The Void (Release am 19.03.2021) that you probably can’t play the new songs live before autumn or winter this year? Or did you plan livestreams?
Nikolas: Of course we would love to play the songs live as soon as possible, but we can’t change the situation and we understand it. But I can imagine, that the first concerts which will be possible again, will be something special and the energy will fly around. Right now we don’t have any lifestreams planed.
Do you have other projects besides Wisborg? First of all I think about your soloproject Morgue Poetry. Is there something planned?
Konstantin: Someday there will be something new, but right now I don’t want to make promises.
What else do you want to tell your fans?
Nikolas: Take care of yourself and take care on each other in this crazy times. Thanks a lot for the heartwarming words after the release of the single and all the support. Like you all we can’t wait to play concerts again.
